He hasn't resigned yet, but it will almost surely happen in the next days. Latest rumours say that he will officially resign after the economic reforms have been approved..

I think the options once (if) he will resign are:
- new elections as soon as possible
- the right stays in power until the end of the legislature and it's headed by one of B.'s followers (i.e. Angelino Alfano or Gianni Letta)
- a new government filled with specialists who can (try to) revive Italy's economy
Nobody knows what's going to happen in the near future

He probably did it purposefully in front of the cameras to show the people he was betrayed etc. He's putting on a show to save face. I expect a bunch off nice commenst when he steps down, shit goan hit the fan soon.
