Nippon Ichi Software introduced a project that "holds the fate of our company" -- Disgaea 4. The president of Nippon Ichi took the stage of a TGS press conference to announce the game wearing a Prinny suit to show "how serious we are."

Like previous entries in the series, Disgaea 4 is a hardcore SRPG with a comedic twist. NIS is promising "stupidity to the MAX" in this upcoming endeavor. Taking place in hell, the story will have a political theme, with players building their own political cabinets. "I'd love to have questionable politicians play this game," he joked.

Looks like Demon Souls has had an influence;

New features for Disgaea 4 are the addition of network features which will allow you to invade other player's worlds, and vice versa.

Smile

Looking forward to this for sure but disappointed so much seemingly rests on the financial success of the game. Especially as I imagine most people take one look and turn up their nose. I know I did with the previous one Laughing

hell yeah!

I read something about it recently and was hoping for some info at TGS.
The higher res sprites look sweet!

The invasion thing makes sense too, considering pirates (and you, in disgaea3) invaded maps previously. So now you might run into another player on your journey to item world level 100 or something. could be pretty damn cool Smile

can't wait!!

About the financial thing... I must say that surprises me a bit. I always thought they were doing well enough with all their games over in japan. Maybe the problem are their recent games where they tried to go 3d and stuff.

If it were up to me I'd just have them keep making more disgaea style games because I loved each and every one of them.

La Pucelle, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Soul Cradle were all great and I want more!!!
Disgaea to the rescuueeeeeee!

Game is apparently confirmed for summer 2011 in North America.

You could be right, which is also why I'm glad they didn't do that with Disgaea. It's worried me, because until it's possible to do it right on a budget I don't think they should bother. There's a lot of charm and detail in the sprites that would be lost in some hokey 3D engine they aren't proficient with. On the other hand, this is really how D3 should have looked :O

Will be a great game, no doubt. Good that they are improving the graphics.
Though in the trailer it doesn't look very different to me(compared to D3), but maybe that's just my memory Very Happy
The PS3 really need more GOOD RPGs. Crying or Very sad

Ok I accept that they aren't a publisher who can put out titles like Insomnia or Naughty Dog, but I'll be damned if it should be priced similarly. If the price is reflective of the actual budget of the game Ill pick it up.

Some more interesting stuff;

Quote:
The game uses Takehito Harada's illustrations in their original form, rather than converting them first into sprites. He said to expect smoother animation as a result. Fans of Nippon Ichi's sprite work will also be pleased to know that the game also includes sprite versions of the art, and you'll be able to switch to them if you please.

The next sales point is "yarikomi" elements. "Yarikomi" is the Japanese word that encompasses all the extra crap that extends gameplay time -- things like collecting items, aiming for the high score, and building up your characters. Disgaea is known for such elements. For part 4, Nippon Ichi is implementing a system where players will be able to show off to other players just how much "yarikomi" they've gotten out of the game. When connected online, you'll be able to attack other players. They'll also be able to attack you.

So what happens if a player who's raised his characters to top levels attacks a beginner player? Shinkawa cited two possibilities for dealing with this. First, they're considering allowing players to set it up so players at certain levels will be able to attack in this way. Additionally, it's possible for players to come into your Disgaea world not just to attack, but to assist as well.

coop too? wow that'd be great.
too bad that disgaea is such a niché game that I'm probably gonna have serious trouble to find someone to play with.

but then, I might not even have a non-hacked ps3 anymore when this comes out so it might not even matter Razz

I probably won't have any trouble spending a few hundred hours on this in single player anyway..
I don't really understand the point of the yarikomi thing though. Isn't that what trophies are for? Showing your progress to other people for bragging rights? hmhmh

There's a couple of people in this thread alone, but who knows it could be even more like Demon Souls and rely less upon organised gaming sessions.

They probably still have more to reveal but it's possible they are referring to some sort of external website which collates data like in Dragon Age.

Japanese version is out... unfortunately the NA version is still several months away.
I do know a little japanese but not enough for a complex game such as this so I'm gonna have to wait Sad

33/40 from famitsu btw.

lol I took express shipping cause I really just can't wait!!!
it's 36$ for the shipping to europe so with the collector's edition 60$ price tag it comes to like 65 euros.

that's quite expensive but disgaea is one of my favourite series so I can live with it.
if I wasn't in such a hurry to get it I'd probably buy it in the UK where it's like 40 euros but I don't want to wait an extra month for it.

that sucks with your ps3 stuck at 3.55... but there's still time, maybe someone figures something out by the time it's out... or maybe the game won't require 3.60+ as the japanese version has been out for a while? I don't know if they usually increase the firmware requirements for overseas releases when the original version worked on 3.55

I think Catherine trick can work,AFIK Disgaea 4 JP is working on 3.55 and below so maybe replacing the files with the EU/US ones will patch the JP to work as the english version.

I received my premium edition yesterday and played for several hours already.
It's awesome, as expected Smile

The new higher resolution sprites look great and the gameplay has all the stuff you'd expect from a disgaea game.
the online integration I noticed so far is other people's characters showing up on your council to vote on stuff.. if you bribe them they get that item. you can appoint a foreign minister to show up on other people's councils and give them a special ability like putting other senators around them to sleep and stuff
you can also appoint a defence minister that other people can randomly summon to help them in battle with an item.

you can also now fuse 2 monster type creatures together to create a bigger and stronger one that actually takes up multiple tiles and are much larger which in disgaea so far was reserved for bosses so that's pretty cool too.

there's an IGN review up btw and it received 8.5 with an editor's choice award
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/119/1192648p1.html

87% so far on metacritic

I bought Disgaea 3 and enjoyed it almost as much as the first one, but Sony has me cockblocked with the new firmware updates for Disgaea 4.

I don't care that PSN is blocked but they're going out of their way to make games hard for me to buy. *waits for new cfw Sad*

Preorder DLC for the premium edition at http://store.nisamerica.com/

As far as I know she's still not available in japan as DLC on PSN so it's uncertain whether or not she'll become normal DLC later down the road or be exclusive to preorders.

I'm around level 220 right now btw and it's reasonably hard (well, more time consuming than hard) to progress further atm.
9-4 power leveling seems decent but targeted towards a level 100+ Desco
Mount Ordeal 4 (I'm only at 3 right now) is supposedly the big bang leveling stage where things will go crazy but Big Bang is pretty hard to get this time around.
Fenris gets it at level 500 and the only other class to get it is a level 4 bouncer.

It seems much harder to get beyond this plateau than it was in Disgaea 3 where Big Bang was readily available and puppy paw stick innocent duping made getting high level statisticians pretty easy.

From what I read to get a puppy paw stick this time around you need to interrogate a level 1000+ nekomata which may reveal a chest which may contain a PPS. Steal rate may also have been nerfed but no confirmation on that.

An interesting thing to note though is that the innocent which allows duping in the PPS (Cat Burglar) seems to be a possible result for Mystery Innocents. So maybe you could go around grabbing mystery innocents and hoping for them to become cat burglars.
I'm unsure if they can be moved though so maybe you'll have to get them in a weapon which would complicate things.

So yeah, lots of stuff to work on and I'm not sure on my strategy yet.
Too much work keeping me busy right now, but I'll spend more time over the weekend and hopefully start getting much higher levels Smile

How are you guys doing?

preordered the premium version from another store Sad.

I'm at 6-1 around lvl 30-48 Had lots of trouble with boss at chapter 5 and I suck at grinding in these games so I never got to the post game content in any of the Disgaeas Sad

By the way, if I bribe your senator do you get those items? I gave your Flonne a few items when she appeared in my game.

oh and is that store good for importing? Are they fast?

Yeah I got some items but didn't know they were from you, thanks! :-)
You get em when you check your foreign minister history in the cam-pain board.
It'll give you the items you were bribed with and tell you what your minister was up to.

When I get home after work today I'll go meet your senator and send you some bribes over.
I'm sure I got some good stuff you could use!

The store is great. I also ordered Disgaea 3 there and they shipped both games before the release date. They also arrived fast with the express international shipping which is kinda expensive but still.. if I convert the 90$ that I paid into euros it's pretty much the same price as buying it in a store next month here :-)

It's still the official NIS store so they also have really nice collectors edition packs and stuff that I don't think you can get anywhere else. I'd definitely recommend it for importing NIS games from the US.

Amazon express shipping might be faster though as they get through customs faster.. I think it balances out though with NIS store shipping earlier.

I would say that is the most fun/addicting part of the Disgaea series, getting insane levels/damge output/item world/bonus chars and uber items and so on.

Yeah the grinding sucks, but once you are at a certain point you can get to lvl 9999 in a couple of minutes and that just rules Very Happy

Yeah, but I never got past lvl 300. On Soul Nomad I got to lvl 4000, That's another NIS game.
I'm gonna try to beat everything on this one though.
BTW Do you have Disgaea 4? What's your psn?

sweet! :)
welcome to the club!
So far to me this is the best disgaea since the first one. theres some really cool improvements and the characters are awesome, so Im sure you wont regret it!

I wonder if items get transfered 1:1 when bribing onlinr.. with innocents and levels and stuff. if yes one coukd bribe a low level friend with some managers, brokers and statisticians to speed thingd along..... hmhmhm,,,will have tk verify that.
still even if it works im not sure if i would want that as getting all that stuff is part of the challenge....
sorry forbthe typos, writing on a tablet..lol..takes some getting used to

-edit-
I read a bit about bribing foreign ministers of other players and it seems that if the items you bribe them with are too high level for them they get 'confiscated' or toned down to a lower level version of it.
So no cheating I guess :-)
