I have to clear my 1st and 3rd Semester Math papers in December or else I won't get my college degree. I've already faffed away a year trying to clear my 2nd and 4th semester papers but what did I expect out of only one month of studying and this would be my second attempt at giving the 1st and 3rd Semester papers as I studied nothing the last time.

On top of that I have to contend with my eating disorder or whatever you can call it. Eating very less for a few days and then eating a lot and that too eating 10-15 muffins in a day. To top it off I need to fix my being anti-social and being a huge recluse. Ignoring calls and avoiding talking to people all to spend that extra minute on the computer. Even my sleeping habits are messed up and I wake up feeling all moody. Just living each day as it comes like an aimless idiot.

The computer has seriously fubar'ed my priorities and its time I start taking things seriously. Its my fault I couldn't control my habit and I'm facing the consequences now. I better start now and stop living in denial or else I'm mega-screwed... this post was really a long time coming. By posting it here at least I'll know that I'm doing something about it even though its scary to finally admit I have a lot of problems which I'm ignoring.

Sigh, its late I'd better sleep and then when I wake up I'll enjoy my last day on the nf Sad

1st I don't think you are anti-social, you may have your priorities mixed up. I guess it all comes down to organise your activities. So make a schedule, time for college, time for studying, time for relaxing or a game, time for browsing, etc. Don't feel too bad if it doesn't work in a couple of days but stick to it. And if things start to work out, feel good about yourself. Reward yourself but don't overindulge.

Oh the computer is a dangerous thing. I almost wasted my first and second year because I couldn't control myself and played with computer too much Sad

You just need to prioritize and organize, as iconized said. I'm sure you'll make it.

Oh and you cannot leave the hump.

I tried and lasted less then three weeks Very Happy

@lutzi: Haha, can't leave this place. Have been here since 2004! Thanks for the offer I really will take you up on that.

@iconized: I am making a schedule right now, hopefully it works. Right now I plan to take a computer "detox" until I give my exams so here's hoping it works!

@dingo: Haha, I should have been clear. I meant last day until December end when my two exams are over! Yeah, I'm realizing this all too late. But better late than never.

Perfect advice. (I've "implemented" it as well with quite good results- at least I managed to finish my exams Razz).

Good luck for your future Yuri! Smile , you can still visit the Hump from time to time (even for some minutes a day, just to keep yourself updated with the latest news/dramas!)

Well, I also had some very extreme exams earlier this year. Took them all. Don't quit the humps or stop playing video games, or whatever keeps you amused in your free time - it'll worsen the situation. Parcel your time out like you gotta study in the mornings and do everything in the rest of the day, for instance - just set apart a 2-3 hour block of the day where it's all dedicated to doing your work. That's what I did - never wore myself up by extensive studying cause it always backfires in my case - I forget most of the things or have a hard time perceiving the material.

You have something going on there. Even when I stop something it eventually comes back to bite me in the arse big time and I end up overdoing it. Time to try something new. Thanks Very Happy

in crunch time before exams i often had blocks of two to three hours of learning interleaved with one hour of doing something else (reading, gaming, playing guitar). Or i would study the whole day with shorter pauses where i did nothing and would give myself three or four hours at the end of the day.

For one exam i removed the hdd from my pc for a few days, so i wouldnt play any games, because i had a game going that would have eaten up all my time xD

I find it impossible to sit all day by the books.

You need to have rest. I've read that there were studies made of how many time you can actually stay concentrated over something, and it turns out to be less than 30 min.

Everything after that period is useless. So you need short (10-15 min) breaks while you learn.

I also find it easier if I write things down. Especially when some nasty mathematics is involved. That way I get the AHA™ effect, and learn things.

Thanks dingo.... I admit I write very little and ur right, I lose concentration in under an hour. This isn't really like a computer where we are doing different things ,studying is just one thing.
Laughing @ AHA™ effect

Everyone is giving such good advice and with Lutzi helping me out... I would have cleared my exams months ago!

Why didn't I post here earlier Confused

The AHA™ effect (or maybe I should name it AHA! effect™ Very Happy) is the single most coolest thing that can happen while you study.

You look at these nasty formulas, wondering how the hell they got there, starting to be depressed and agitated because you can't find how the fuck that can be true, then you start writing things down, and suddenly: AHA! You see where that came from, and you get that feeling: I can do fucking anything! And then in some cool story you'd probably try to bungee jump, go sky diving, try parkour or some strange shit like that, but since normal student life kinda sucks, you just feel good and continue learning on Laughing

Oh and you can always ask stuff in the humps ^^ There are loads of great ppl who will help you any way they can (*for Lutzi: if you know what I mean, and I think that you do xD)

Depends on the person Wink

All the math I have to learn is far from useless...

Go ahead and apply advanced math in web dev. Laughing

Tsja but you could choose another discipline in computer science where you would really need it. Also the math will help you develop abstract thinking even if you will never use it in your daily work.

Aaah students! If you realize there are 24h in a day and you sleep 8 and most people i know study max 6-8h a day in their peak exam period, there is plenty of room for relaxation. So if you fuck up, it is a) a matter of bad scheduling or b) extreme procrastination.

Some of you might know, or don-t know, that I graduated from uni some years ago. I was the lazy, but efficient type of student. Going to the lessons 50% of the time, no studying in advance, and then lock myself away during exams. But i always passed my exams. In retrospect, I should have done more interesting stuff than being drunk 24/7 and playing video games and watching movies. But I had a good time and I got my engineering degree!

Nevertheless, I always had a good interest in economics and after the major meltdown of the recent years I thought 'well I really want to understand the basic fundamentals of this, let's go study economics'. So I am currently following the full economics program at the university (4 years, ompf). The first year was a little experiment as I cannot go to the lessons as I am working full time and getting the books, making the exercises, studying, making group papers etc is a real time scheduling exercise. But I passed all my exams this year, so I am confident that I am following the right method.

1) The first thing I did, was throw the cable TV away. You easily spend 10h a week watching tv. You'd be amazed how much you can do when you throw that fucker away. I now only have the public news channel I can capture via DVB-T antenna. Just get rid of time wasting shit you know but don't want to admit. Uninstall some lame computer game, get rid of the tv, get rid of your time waster!

2) Don't get rid of everything though. You need some relaxation during the study/work. I actually used to have an exam-project when I was an engineering student. So I had something to look forward too after studyin. During winters it was sometimes a 6000pc Jigsaw, in summers it was watching soccer championships with my friends and betting for crazy for example.

3) Get a 'post-stress' reward. A holiday, something fun you will do afterwards, a party, a concert ticket you bought. And book it advance, so you cannot chicken out!

4) And most important, plan-schedule-execute. Make a realistic schedule in advance, follow the schedule, adapt if needed. If you have a 5 day schedule and after 2 days you are on schedule, you are pretty sure things will work out for 5 or even 10 days if you just follow the schedule. Don't panic, stay calm and just work your ass off

5) Be honest and work result oriented. Whether you like the educational system or not doesn't matter. You are evaluated on exams/papers results, not on how much effort you do. So it doesn't matter that you 'wasted' hours on doing stuff that is interesting but irrelevant. Be honest with yourself, don't do easy stuff and avoid difficult stuff, because we all know it is the difficult stuff that gives you points and not easy stuff.

6) Ow yeah, eat/drink/sleep like a normal person. Some people i knew were skipping on food and sleep to study or work 30mins more a day... In the long run that really fucks you up

Good luck btw. And math is not completely useless. After a hard-core year of economics I think a lot of people in the field should have taken a couple of additional semesters of math as a lot of the models use arbitrary values and kinder garten school assumptions math that surely can be improved a lot
