Got a job offer as junior network engineer with a salary of £27000 each year. Its a really great opertunity but Im abit concerned with the pay.
I know that the first years will be abit rough but is it doable? Can you live in london with a salary of £27000?
Im also thinking how far away from london do i have to live to get a decent apartment?

£27k per year? That's £2250 per month right?
I dk about the standard of living in UK, but it sounds like a nice pay...

That's about a pretty average salary in Holland, and I think it's amply sufficient to live a great life. Unless your idea is to throw parties on a boat and have 3 vacations a year. In any case... you won't have to resort to looting and burning the neigbourhood.

Before taxes. Its actually a pay cut from what im making now in sweden.
Im thinking I'll be able to raise my pay in a few years by taking a few cisco certifications.

You really can't compare Scandinavian wages to UK, as the cost of living is significantly higher in Scandinavia so the wages have to balance out.

Hmmm... you should ask geordieracer
On the other hand, it's a "normal" pay for that type of work. Ofc it could always be more

Main problem with london is like you have already said is the rent if you can get a cheap place outside the centre or a place near the subway/rail you should be ok

For London that's pretty low pay. You can get a similar amount outside the capital.

depending on your education that could be a good pay. But if you have a uni degree in IT or engineering that is shitty, especially if you live in London... What kinda company are you working for? I know people who charge 500/h for IT consulting in banks...
When I got out of uni I made 37k my first job. (I have an engineering degree with major in biotech en minors in IT, so pretty nice skillset). I should check how much it is now after 3 years, somewhere around 45k I guess. I am still doing my first job.
Will be moving on in the near future and I almost have my master economics with a major in financial markets. You don't want to know how much those banking people pay you when you have some sort of a finance degree AND some sort of IT/engineering/math degree... I applied once at some dodgy trading company and they offered 100k as a start, insane.
Friend of mine is a civil engineer (+ he has an additional economics degree) and was making somewhere around 35k (+ some extra legal benefits) and recently moved on to an IT business analyst/SAP consulting company after only 2 years in the jobmarket and they gave him 40k + car+ cellphone + laptop + 60-150% bonus depending on performance!
On the other hand I know people who work as debuggers in some random coding sweatshop who make < 25k/year. If you are young, a lot depends on the degrees you have. Don't focus on the now, but check if you can get a car/raise/house whatever in the near future when you promote.

QFT. The cost of living in most areas outside London is cheaper and you can still get that kind of pay. I currently work in Soho but live in East London, the rent here is only slightly more expensive than what I was paying outside London to the West, and the pay increase into the City was worth it.
Acer: I would suggest trying to push for a higher wage, or a relocation package, citing the fact that the cost of living in London is high.

I was offered a job in London 10 years ago on 25k and I turned it down because of the cost of living in London, god knows what its like now.
Personally I wouldn't live in London on 27k, but lots of people manage it.

I dont have a uni degree. Ive taken icnd1 which is a cisco certification, come wednesday im taking icnd2 so I get the full ccna certification.
The funny thing is i would actually do more advanced work for less pay than what im currently making. Also those 27K a year on call on a rotating schedule.
Im not that keen on going back when it comes to my salary and feel i have to work my way up so i can make what im making now which is about £30k yearly.
The guy who interviewed me for the position was quite hard when it came to money, basically he said that 27k is as far as they can go.

27k GBP living in London ain't going to be enough.
You might be better living up in a town like St Neots and commuting to work every day on the train though. 40 minute train ride, and the cost of housing a fuckload less.

With only ICND1 you're doing well to get a job with that pay tbh, assuming you can work out the costings in London I'd take it. 27k is a fairly standard Graduate rate for the rest of the country, it is higher in London due to cost of living but without a degree you're doing well.

Any tips on good suburbs outside of london? Ive been using the foxton agency site to check for apartments but ive only searched the outer london areas. Id be willing to commute 20-30 minutes and instead be able to live in a nice one bedroom flat thats not as expensive as a shitty studio flat in london.
Hows the commuting in england? Do the trains come and go fairly often on weekdays?
What about internet access? What type if you live in the suburbs, the speed and cost?
Also are there alot of gyms in smaller towns?

How far do the underground trains go? 2200 is that a yearly cost for commuting with train to london?
So would living at the end of an underground line be a good start? Not too expensive flats and fairly short commute distance each day?
Any good areas to search for flats?

Well im kinda tired of sweden, dont like the people. And living and working in england is a great oppertunity.
Actually the work i applied for is for an internal position, the company Ticketmaster owns the swedish company im currently working for. So I didnt apply for work through a job site or anything like that.
I feel I've outgrown sweden, and also I feel in england id be able to work my way to a better salary than I could if i stayed in sweden.
So yes my current pay in england would be low but in 5-10 years id be making much more compared to sweden.

Interesting, the reason I asked was due to the pay. If you want to move it might be worth applying around externally in other parts of the country, of course, based on your current situation I'd take the job and keep looking around.
Sounds to me like sharing a house is the best bet, but I've always avoided London as I hate the place.. So I don't know much about it. I'd suspect that your company will have a number of people on similar pay at a similar age looking for housemates.
I think there is a website too.. ermm.. http://www.spareroom.co.uk/ .. Dunno if its any good but it might be worth a look.

That isnt bad money a lot better than most people get here, the part thats going to kill you is renting a property, travelling and living expenses.
Look for a cheap 1 bed flat to rent, outside of london, renting a place in london thats is half decent is lol, it aint going to happen.
Look at either buying a cheap car or travelling via the tube, weigh up the pros and cons and pricing, it might be cheaper in the car, but it might be a nasty journey with loads of traffic.
I would say get yourself an older KA for Transport, for shopping and work.
It might be good to see if you can get someone in the UK to shop about for you before you come.
