Apparently some people think there's hardly any useful software available for Mac. Time to be a bit more specific! I think pretty much everything is possible on a Mac, as long as you're not some kind of uber 1337 programming dude I guess -- like Werelds.
Tons of specific software is listed on http://www.macupdate.com/. Of course you could also run Windows on your Mac with Bootcamp and run Windows software. To be honest I've never really needed Windows since I got the Mac (2,5 years).

PotPlayer

I am excluding games, of course.
Those are some that I remember made my work harder on OSX86.
Uninterested in uneducated cheapo alternatives such as "PotPlayer/MPCHC = QuickTime ".

@Rofl_Mao: are you taking a cheap shot at Werelds there? Because it kinda looks like it could be meant as a personal insult. I d appreciate it, if you could clear that up, or remove the part from the post.
ontopic: you re asking the wrong question. It is not what can be done on a mac, but rather, what can't be done on other systems that a mac can do => exactly, nothing.
It used to be the platform of choice for multimedia stuff, but those days have passed imho with the advent of intel-macs and bootcamp, because now everybody can see that creative "apps" that run on both systems run significantly better on the same hardware when booted into windows.
There is only a very few programs that are mac-exclusive, that might be worth it (but still have equals on windows / linux). Like Logic for example for making music.

I'll clarify it
Some time ago I said that if I was to spend my whole day working under OS X rather than Windows or Ubuntu, I'd spend much more time in the terminal than I need to with said OS's. OS X is just much more closed off in many ways.
More annoyingly, as a serious developer or even designer you'll have to rely on third party apps for everything anyway, because Apple's own built-in packages are out of date or in some cases, broken. Just search for "os x pstops" and you'll see a very basic package that breaks every other update. For someone like Rofl_Mao that won't be a big deal, because he doesn't do anything with his Mac that you can't do on a phone these days (which makes me wonder why you pay so much in the first place, but whatever). Pstops is what Adobe's software uses internally for a lot of conversions, so it's quite essential. Difference is that Apple don't do hotfixes, you'll have to wait months for a fix - if it even comes at all. Result? Manually compiling and installing it.
For me, there's very little difference between any of the 3 OS's mentioned so far. I've just come to prefer Ubuntu these days because of how customisable and flexible it is
@ Rofl_Mao: nice try at a stab mate, I'm still waiting for a reply to my post of what, 3 weeks ago? I'm not alone in what I said, but I have never said OS X or Macs are shit (in themselves anyway; value for money is shit with them) nor have I said the software a developer needs isn't available for OS X. OS X is a fine operating system, but even my designer colleagues have to resort to the terminal for a lot of tasks which I don't need to in goddamn Ubuntu (that's Linux, FYI), let alone Windows.
I can give you dozens of reasons why Macs, OS X and iOS aren't worth the price premium over other systems (considering they're no different from "normal" PC's or in the case of OS X, "normal" UNIX OS's), but I'm not going to bother because I know you won't give me a single good counter argument anyway. I've already presented you with plenty of reasons why Apple are a pain in the ass for anyone in IT (including students).
Want something you can't do on OS X? Find 3 major alternatives to any piece of software. On Windows and Linux you've always got multiple options, each with their own pros and cons. On OS X there's usually only 1 which doesn't do everything you need/want it to do.
