YES! Don't bother waiting for the PS4/Xbox3, they may be announced next year... but I guarantee they won't hit the shelves before 2013. Just pick up a cheap 360 or PS3 now, then grab some of the enormous back catalogue. As for hacking? Yes, it's stagnated at 3.55. Every game up until now (bar 2 or 3) can be played, but future titles are going to be tricky - if not impossible. As much as I love the PS3 exclusives, I'd recommend getting a 360 instead.
Far more supported, better quality multi-platform games, larger selection of titles. Just make sure you buy a Slim or at least a recent/new Jasper, so as to avoid any potential hardware gremlins. Honestly, getting both PS3 and 360 would be the "best of both worlds" but that way lies expense. 360's are dirt cheap these days, a brand new 250GB Xbox-Slim will cost around £160 and a preowned Jasper will be even cheaper. PS3s are a bit more touchy and I don't recommend buying a "new" one at the moment, not with how the scene has stalled, as you might unluckily get a device with 3.56 or 3.60 installed --- no hacks.
Just owning/playing a console won't turn you into a consolefag (just ask Leo  ) as you don't have to sit and play PC titles on it, ruining the experience, instead you can just enjoy the games that we will - sadly - never see.

Well, I just saw an action on allegro.pl (Polish equivalent to eBay) and the guy's selling Jasper XBOX360 from 2009 with improved cooling. The console is already modified, and a 20gb hardrive is in there already. The price is 120 pounds.
Anyway, I don't know ANYTHING about hacking the consoles, mind linking any tutorials/uber newb guides?

£120 is a great buy for a pre-modded machine, especially a Jasper. You'll want to upgrade that HDD though... 20GB won't get you jack shit these days. Pick up a 120, or get a 320GB Scorpio Blue and flash it with the XboxS 320GB HDSS.BIN (again, I'm sure someone can find a tutorial for you)
I haven't hacked my 360 in a while, so all my old tutorials are outdated now, but I'm sure someone more clued-up can fill you in =)

I got my PS3 in January. My reasoning was close to yours - X360 seemed kinda useless, as most games I could play on it either are already on PC, or are available for PS3 also. Sony's machine just has so much more games that I could never get otherwise.
So far I'm pretty happy with it. The game library is quite huge. I don't think I'll run out of stuff to play any time soon and I'm quite sure the hacking scene will budge, sooner or later, as it always does. And some of the games are real gems. Heavy Rain, for example, just blew my mind. More a movie than a game, perhaps, but it's still an incredible experience.
Nothing bad in owning a console. Console gaming is a different kind of fun, but it's fun nonetheless. I've even bought some Moves to play stuff with friends and for an ocasional Fight: Lights out session

Dont get ANYTHING with modded/"improved" cooling. This is all bullshit that ruins xbox 360.
You can safely get 360 fat on JASPER mobo (latest fat model - not red ringing at all)
Or one of 360S models - These are safe just as Japser if not more

I wouldnt imagine playing without game installs now. I install everything I play on 360.
The disc DONT spin so it doesnt sound like jet all the time
not spinning disc generates less hot (i guess)
faster loading and less textures pop up
So I would suggest getting one with harddrive. 20gb is a bit too small. Tho every disc is around ~7gb so it fits bt its just uncomfortable.

LT1.9 is out now, but LT+ is still fine. You'll have to get it reflashed once XGD3 games start coming out (and C4Eva releases LT2.0)

Yes, definitely. If you just want a machine that works, is hacked out-of-the-box, then yes; get that. It's got everything you need to just start burning games and playing =) Later down the line I recommend getting a larger HDD (actually, probably better getting one soonish... less hassle transferring saves/downloads then) and you'll want to keep an eye on the hacking scene for the release of LT2.0
Secondly; don't go online. If XBL tells you there is an update; IGNORE IT. The current dash installed on there is fine, but once you update it will wipe LT+ and install stock firmware. Only go online (ie; update to latest dashboard) if you've got someone who can flash to LT1.9 for you.
Thirdly, and most CRITICALLY, ask the seller for the drive keys. Without them you're in for a real fucking hassle upgrading to the latest LT versions.

Its a special key/serial that is inside Your dvd adn motherboard firmware. It basicly links drive to motherboard of xbox360. Its unique on every xbox.
So when flashing You must COPY stock key from drive to the new flashed firmware, becouse its very hard to read the key out of motherboard

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the key can't be extracted so that M$ can't detect you're running a hacked FW and ban you... that's why LT is a "stealth" fiwmare.
