No (real) HL news, hence why it's not posted in the "EP3 news only pl0x " thread.
Also inb4 where is EP3, these replies belong to the other thread.
They also don't know the exact content and release date of the Portal 2 DLC #1 because they are making content for many DLCs and they haven't decided exactly what will be included in this one.

It's more of a Steam thing, but maybe still applies in this thread;
Quote: |
Free To Play Games Have Arrived on Steam
Press Releases - Valve 10:45
Five F2P Launch Titles Offering Exclusive Content to Celebrate Launch
Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today introduced support for Free to Play (F2P) Games on Steam with the launch of five F2P games.
Available immediately, the launch titles are Spiral Knights, Forsaken Worlds, Champions Online: Free for All, Global Agenda: Free Agent, and Alliance of Valliant Arms (AVA).
Beginning tomorrow (Weds) with Spiral Knights and concluding Sunday with AVA, each of the five launch titles will offer exclusive in-game content to those who try the "F2P game of the day" on Steam. In game transactions in all of the titles will be supported by Steam's micro-transaction backend system that is available to Steamworks partners and currently used in Valve's Team Fortress 2.
"The introduction of Free to Play games is another example of the constant evolution of Steam," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "Free to Play games offer new game genres and game experiences for customers, while offering developers and publishers new revenue opportunities and the ability to reach customers in areas of the world where the traditional packaged goods model is less popular than F2P."
Specific details on the F2P games of the day and their exclusive in-game content will be made available in the coming days.
Steam is a leading platform for PC & Mac games and digital entertainment serving over 1,500 games to over 30 million active accounts worldwide. For more information, please visit www.steamgames.com

There's a reason this separate thread was created, to separate EP3 talk from general Valve talk, so let's keep it clean.

There, i fixed it.
I know it is just a quote, but that line was stinging my eyes quite a bit.
Counter-Strike was not created by valve, they merely bought the mod once it became more popular than the original game it modded. A lot more popular. Even after they bought it, their actions were limited to small fixes and as far i can remember, the only real development came with 1.6 or so and later CS:S.
Team Fortress.. thats an even older story dating back to the age of Quake 1. It was in the late 90s when it became a valve thing, as they stepped in and bought the guys creating the sequel to the Quake mod. Then came Team Fortress Classic and later Team Fortress 2.
I have to admit, that unlike CS, which Valve did not really manage to improve, TFC was great when it came (partially thanks to the better engine i guess) and TF2 was great as well, until they started to turn it into a DLC item fest.
There I said it.. sorry for derailing the thread a little, had to get this off my chest though

The quote was accurate in the first place.
"creators of best-selling game franchises"
The CS mod wasn't a franchise.
The TF mod wasn't a franchise.
Valve made them to be.

1. They didn't buy "it" - they hired the two developers. Minh Le has left Valve, Jess Cliffe is still there. That stings me more than that line stung you - there's a huge difference between buying/stealing an idea, or actually employing the people that came up with it in the first place.
2. Their influence was much bigger than what you make it out to be. 1.0 improved the models and animations tremendously. Things like spectator mode were also made possible by them. All the assets were upgraded (textures, sounds), half the maps were designed by Valve's mappers (some of which, I might add, were again hired out of the community). CS would not have been the hit it still is without them; the money that goes around in that "scene" is ridiculous. Most people on this board wouldn't mind the salaries those guys are getting
3. It probably DID become a bestseller - despite it STILL BEING FREE after they started selling it (you can still find the mod versions of 1.0-1.5 on the web). 1.6 didn't come as a mod version obviously, but it's still free as long as you got HL so.
And the exact same shit goes up for TFC. They hired, pumped in extra resources and allowed the developers to do what they were doing, with more resources at their disposal. I love TF2 as well; DLC item fest? Yeah, aesthetic crap that add zilch to the gameplay, I still don't get why it bothers some people. All the gameplay altering stuff is still freely patched in, so who gives a fuck
Example #3: Portal - same story as CS and TFC
Dev team does something awesome -> Valve hires -> Valve pumps in money -> We love it -> Valve gets money back.

I'm with Werelds on this. I may not like the way Valve screws European customers, or the ridiculous wait between the HL2 episodes, but Valve as a company? As a developer? They really are shit hot.

By 2008 CS 1.0 had sold a little over 4 million units at retail alone, so yes it was a best seller.

Nope. I disagree with the notion that it's publishers doing this. Gabe HIMSELF could tell me, personally, that he doesn't set the exchange rate and prices and I would still call him a liar. To his face. I steadfastly refuse to believe every publisher on the face of the earth magically charges 30-45% more when paying in Euros.

Why? First of all, they don't charge more in Euros. They charge more in *some* countries that use the Euro. Not every Euro using country suffers from that bullshit (which is even worse). EA does it in their store, it happens on Amazon, Play and every other goddamn site I've looked at. Also doesn't just happen with games, it happens with pretty much everything. I told you when I was buying TW2 from GoG - even they did it with that, because the publishers tell them to (or they won't get to sell the game).
Whether you think Valve should force publishers (including themselves) to not do it is an entirely different matter.
Fact is, it's become an industry standard, every shop that does regional pricing does it fucked up like this

Maybe you're right, I'd never checked the EUR prices on stores like Amazon before because Amazon don't IP lock me and force me to pay in a currency not recognised by my country. I have a UK Steam account and should be paying in GBP, or at the very least a current market exchange rate for NOK>GBP, instead they lock me into paying Euro. No other store does that, which is the only evidence I need to prove that Steam are forcing these changes.

Every digital distribution provider, that has their prices in EUR (and nowadays that is pretty much every one of them), charges me just as much or even more than Steam does... and I don't live in a "rich" country by far...
This is indeed a global problem, and bashing Valve/Steam for this always seemed unreasonable to me. In fact, I seem to recall Valve lowering their EUR prices for Portal 2, bringing them more or less in-line with other regions.
The only way I can get decent prices is if I order a physical DVD from UK. It still usually costs less even with shipping. With pre-order discount the difference is even larger.
