I'm just curious about what you think is the most atmospheric game ever, one that makes you feel most part of the world even today?

The reason I ask is, I want to check out games I might have missed in the past, and right now, I don't want to sort by gameplay (did that approach before), but by the world and atmosphere. So, let me hear it gents, let's say, everyone gets three picks, and please, tell me a reason for said picks as well. Thank you.

I'm sure whatever game I'm going to mention that had a believable world (like HL1, Deus Ex, System Shock 2), you have already played it so... Smile

TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."

King's Bounty

 Spoiler:

nah, kidding.

my 3 picks are:

1.) Amnesia: The Dark Descent - it's fucking scarry. I shat brix while playing it
2.) NeoCron - not a singleplayer game, but I loved the atmosphere
3.) System Shock 2 - yup. you know why.

Stalker SOC, Deus Ex, Morrowind and GTA Vice City come to mind.
There's certainly other games that I don't remember now.

I thought Clive Barker's Undying was very well done for the time. Totally boo.

I have actually never played Mafia, seen a few friends try it, and left me unimpressed. Rest are all good though. But we can go even further back in time, even before Fandango.

I'm not that old, you never know. Out of the ones you mentioned, SS2 always took ... guts to sit down and play. Yes, I was young, but atmospheric games can scare me. Like Undying - epic game right there, pun not intended.

If you're looking for "scary" atmospheric games, the Penumbra games and Amnesia are a must, as well as Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth (very underrated, imo).

Yes, Dark Corners was great, and it was a very good implementation - was scary and visceral. Liked it a lot. Penumbra games are ... well, at the risk of sounding like a grow up baby, sometimes too scary for me. It's not the visuals, it's the sound!

Deus Ex due to the sheer amount of back-story scattered all over the place in notes/books/emails.

Oblivion had an awesome weather ambiance to it (albeit it with the help of like 2 mods). Couple that with a bow, deer, lots of ponds/lakes, and I felt like Bear Grills! Love just roaming the wilderness during a storm! Very Happy

I had to stop playing Amnesia - scary shit - yea, I'm a pussy!

The Thief series. If you want scary, the level 'The Cradle' in Thief 3 has more scare in it in one level than most horror games manage in an entire game. I swear I felt physical pain when I had to enter that cage thing.

STALKER series
Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth
Undying
Thief series
The Penumbra games, I thought they were scarier than Amnesia.

-edit just noticed it was only supposed to be only three picks.

Not yet mentioned:

Hitman games
Clive Barker's Jericho !
Metro 2033
Cryostasis !
The Suffering
Condemned
Chronicles of Riddick
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Dead Space
Alone in the Dark (2008)
...

Edit:
Hard to give specific reasons, since its the world as a whole that draws you in most of the time and it's a sum of all the different and often subtle parts that make a game.
But almost all of them have very good dynamic lighting and shadowplay.

Hitman has the crowd system (4); also diverse, colourful, detailed locations and Jesper Kyd's awesome soundtrack.

Jericho is an underrated game, indeed hectic and a little bit frustrating but it has some of the most impressive architecture (esp. rome level),
gritty enemy & sound design and huge wet, slimy textures covered in bumpmaps.

Cryostasis is one of my favorites, still a technological marvel especially with Physx enabled. It delivers by far the best feeling of severe cold and does well on the horror part too.
But its strongest suit is the amazing time travel story and the consequences your actions have on the characters. (particularly the captain of the ship)

Yeah Condemned was a good one. The abandoned department store freaked me out.

After all these years, I still feel the urge to install and travel through the islands. It's a special game indeed.

I think we should include in the PC Games FAQ that the answer to any question is King's Bounty Cool Face
