seems SoE is getting rid of SWG...goodbye a once great game to wander off into the history of MMOs that once was

Quote:
Dear Star Wars Galaxies™ Community Member,

We write to you today to inform you that on December 15, 2011, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) and LucasArts will end all services (MMO and Trading Card Game) for Star Wars Galaxies (SWG). The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.

We are extremely grateful to all of the SWG fans. We have had the rare opportunity to host one of the most dedicated and passionate online gaming communities and we truly appreciate the support we've received from each and every one of you over the course of the past eight years.

In recognition of your incredible loyalty, we are extending special Fan Appreciation offers to the current SWG community. We also plan to go out with a bang with a galaxy-ending in-game event in December and hope to see you all there. The details relating to these offers and events as well as the timeline and specifics regarding the discontinuation of the service, are provided below.

Again, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our player community for making SWG one of the best online communities in gaming history.

Sincerely,
Sony Online Entertainment & LucasArts

yea it was still to this day the best MMO (pre-cu) as far as complexity, player housing options, and the player interaction with the cantina/dancers and the way player shops worked..

it will be missed, it was on a limping leg for years..but sad to see it finally die.

Well, as long as they don't start fucking with swg-emu, I have no problems seeing the official service go. In fact, it would be only sensible to release the server files for the swgemu guys. But that won't happen. It never happens, no matter how logical it would be.

Still. It reeks of "no competition for TOR". I play the 45 free days they gave after the hacks, and the moderately populated Farstar server has a quite numerous playerbase. Mos eisley is always packed with activity, the more popular questing zones always have players cruising around, and it's an overall lively place.

Sure, not quite pre-CU Coronet levels of a clusterfuck, but by the looks of it, it's still a popular MMO with a steady playerbase. But I guess a WoW clone with StarWars skin over it might suffer if a more complex sandbox MMO is out there with the much more popular 'oringal-trilogy' setting going on.

First it was the combat upgrade (CU) which overhauled the character classes and combat, and that caused a stir but it wasn't nearly as bad as the NGE (new gaming experience or what was it called).

yea the NGE was the biggest "this games going to die" patch..think within a month it lost most players..and just kinda hobbled along for years.

Ah, I see. Also, this may reveal a potential release date for SWTOR. Since, obviously, they are shutting SWG for SWTOR, so that more players get attracted to it and switch over. Perhaps they'll release SWTOR between November - January maybe?

CU is "Combat Upgrade". It was a reworking of the original combat system. It's not the same as NGE (New Game "Enhancements"), that was patched in a few months after CU, without consulting with the playerbase first that pretty much became the textbook example on how NOT to go about doing game changes. It was much more radical than the CU was and an overwhelming amount of players left the game because of it.

we do obviously, your lack of interest in the subject you do realize has no reflection of overall opinion of others..

or unless that was a legitimate question...then I can only speak for myself. and I say "me".
so that's at least one that cares, the others you will have to survey on your own time to draw a conclusion to your question.

I'm one of the rare few that actually enjoyed the CU ... but yeah, NGE was appalling and killed the game as effectively as shutting the servers down would have. SWGEmu is the only hope now, but it's pretty much dead Sad

I had the first AT-ST on the server (as far as I could tell). I had to grind so many faction points to get that thing. But once I did it was awesome.

Those things were invicible. I died once in middle of anchorhead and there was like 20 rebel players trying to kill my AT-ST, I had time to respawn and walk back to anchorhead before they managed to kill it.

But usually I'd just walk around Anchorhead picking off the poor fools not realizing that killing opposite faction NPCs tags them as PVPable.

Eventually they would get a hunting party for me organized...and they would all die too. Fun times Very Happy

my first MMO beta tested JTL and then they ruined it with the NGE. combat upgrade, I agree was bearable to an extent but when the NGE hit, i do not think an online game has ever witnessed such a mass exodus.

Thank god for SWGEMU

Considering how long sony has kept everquest and things like infantry going, you'd think they never shut down anything at all.

wouldnt it make more sense to sell it off to another company to run it as a f2p supported by microtransactions? seems to be what all the cool kids are doing... and also from a money-making point of view makes sense as well... f2p usually brings in a large new player base...

Second MMO fucked by SOE.

I miss MxO beta days. I loved MxO - interlock combat was great, and very fresh at that time. Reactive, not that "kill your enemie's health bar before he kills yours". You actually had to react to your opponent, and outsmart him in PvP. Button mashing was a no go, Also, it was the fucking Matrix man!

Never played SWG but if the patch caused them to lose so many players, why didnt they just roll it back to how it previously was?

Sad to hear but not entirely unexpected. I'm surprised it was still around for as long as it was though. I also had loads of fun on this. Farseer(?) server with my guild United Anarchy. The majority of the players I was playing with also moved on before the combat update. I did too and started playing city of heroes instead.

swg is a great example of how derping a complex game does not make it automaticly a good game or a game bought by the masses. I loved it pre-cu, the totally player driven economy, housing, exploring (come on, didnt you LOVE to have some joyrides on tatooine ? ^^) .

RIP ..

I am pretty sure people are creating private servers after the close down, look at world of warcraft for sample and that game is still alive.

Well, there goes my thought of getting back into it :/
Here's to hoping that a bunch of GOOD private servers will pop up now.
Though I gotta admit that I'm not really intersted in TOR and I can't quite explain why.
