My Astraweb account has run out, and I was thinking about maybe trying another Usenet server out. I've had some issues with Astraweb as of late (a lot of missing parts, files, et cetera) so I was thinking about maybe getting a new one.

I was looking at this list:

http://www.newsgroupservers.net/

Is that reliable? Do you guys have any advice? I live in Sweden and am used to nearly always (except on weekends) maxing my 100Mbit download.

Yes, yes I'm back.

As of now the only alternative is giganews honestly. Usenetserver used to be great up till they started trying to compete with retention and had failing servers, then proceeded to tell us customers that everything was lost and we had ot wait till it was reuploaded and wouldn't be given an extension or refund.

I don't think anyone has the service astra does for what you're paying. I remember reading or hearing something about how astra was using the same service or servers giganews was using, not sure what that was about or who I heard it from.

I have also wanted to move from Astra sometimes but I always keep getting back because most other providers adhere to DMCA which removes a lot of posts. Astra can be a little shaky sometimes but overall the best provider I think.I am in Sweden as well.

I tried supernews which was great (powered by giganews) but DMCA was a big problem for me. Mad

yep! sounds like them. Any complaints to them and they tell you tough shit. I've only had maybe 2 things I've downloaded not work in the few years I've used astra.

using newshosting.com for a few years. really reliable in terms of 400-500 day retention, I have some speed issues but the most likely culprit is my ISP. oh, and I share it with someone without them complaining.

oh, and I use NZBsRus.com to make sure I don't download any password protected shit Smile

I'm a big fan of newshosting.com. Reasonably priced unlimted accounts, 30 connections, included SSL, and it always maxes my line speed. Retention is usually pretty good too, routinely download stuff 400+ days old.

Heh, using usenet at my provider. Pretty satisfactory imho. Pay 5 bucks extra per month and you get newsgroups with 200 day retention and the speed you DL is determined by the speed of your contract, mine is 50 mbit so its awwwwwright.

They dont

They ABSOLUTELY DO remove content. My entire reason for switching to Astraweb about a year ago after being with Newshosting for several years prior.

I noticed certain content from a certain network was always missing just enough blocks so that there weren't enough pars to repair. The posts spanned roughly 4 or 5 months. Switched from Newshosting to Astraweb and, surprise surprise, all the posts were available in their entirety - no missing blocks at the end of each file.

In summary - Newshosting bends over and takes it from the MPAA. Stay far away.

Hehe, usenet-server placed me in a "special high-bandwidth group" when I got fiber and my speed sunk to 512kbit speeds. When I asked them what happened they said they had a special server for high-bandwidth users to accommodate our speeds, when in reality they simply couldn't afford to have us as customers. They were very happy to get rid of me, even giving me my money back for 2 months...

Astraweb works fine for me. During high-traffic time (afternoons) I may not reach 11.25MB/s, but mostly that's my average speed. Smile

Why not do as i do.

Use hitnews.eu for a 3 day trial acount, fill out some random bullshit to a new made hotmail account, and do this over when it runs out.
Been doing this for almost a year now and up to account nr. 73 Cool Face

Ok, thanks for clarification. It seemed kinda weird they don't block it right away.

They've been attempting to rebill me for about 3 months now, and it's still running.
