PostPosted: Tue, 4th Jan 2005 17:54    Post subject: Poor quality of moderation and/or users?
Just a little observation that has started to "bug" me for a while.

It's been a while since I last visited Isonews and I seem to remember never wanting to visit it again, why?

Every post at isonews has became a flame topic, people seem to think it is clever to post "smart alec" comments about the most simple of topics.

I see this is becoming a reality at NFOrce.

-> Whats happened to the community here!?

It's become apparant that some users feel they are elite (aka "the dogs bollocks"), and should not enlighten users with simple input into topics.

Since being with NFOrce when it started it's not the road I would like to see the site go down.

Is this to do with the lack/quality of moderation?
-> I believe it could well do, a simple way to solve this is to jump on the topic and identify the users that start to flame and a quick edit of the post.

Most importantly it is to do with the users...
-> Many quality users have already disapeared and it would seem apparant it's due to the quality of content that is in the nforce vbb.
The flamers need to be identified and to be given a warning or be banned from the msg board.

Let's stop NFOrce going down the same road as isonews?

I agree about Izonews... But I just can't see your concern, I might be naive but I haven't encountered so much flaming on the board to see it as a problem... Though I believe it is appearing more often and a explanation might be that more people gets to know what nforce and then come to the site as "newbs"... And they might not know how to control themselves...

But hey thats just me Razz

Good post UF7. There isn't that much flaming but I've noticed a few regulars who flame with every post. I think it's to do with the type of audience that sites such as nforce and isonews attract. There isn't really much you can do about it without an extreme level of moderation.

I agree although there will always be immature people on every forum. i think NFOrce is great considering it's safe to ask a dumb question (unless it's a request Smile ) and still get worthwhile responses. Some forums just turn into 'who can make the funniest response' which may be fun for a while but it gets nothing done in the end. I dont think NFOrce is on a path to become a bad community and most people who are trouble makers usually get taken care of.

I have noticed some flaming on the board but It's much worse in the irc channel. Another problem is users who are acting like drug addicts and typing things that don't make sense.

On the forum that I am an admin on we use a warning system (php hack)
And if any member starts flaming a normal member his or her warning level goes up 10%, if the member flames a admin or mod he or she gets banned Smile

I've heard of a similar hack. Karma levels or something. If a user makes a good post people can give them good karma and visa versa.

Mods, you need to stop people from shouting their sources not only those who request. You also need to move threads to proper forums. Those who are acting retarded should atleast be temp banned, if possible perm banned.

well, i think moderating needs to be stricter. One good example was the thread there a user started to call someone "nigger", he got a warning but continued on flaming without any consequences. I won't mention any nicks or link to the thread but i am sure we all read it. And bt has become too much of a topic recently, this should stop completly.

I'm sorry [mrt], if he's been around so long, I of course was mistaken in my output.

I withdraw any derogatory remark and ask to be forgiven for this misdeed.

Sorry UF7 :/

Yes, all bt threads are very unneeded here. I think all posts that mention any sources at all should be removed and the creator should be warned.

wouldn't it be possible to filter the use of some words to specific users? say, users with less than 20 or so posts shouldn't be able to create a thread/reply cointaining words like "torrents" or maybe common sentences like "where is the torrents" ... mods should know sentences noobs commonly use when they request their crap?

dunno if it's even possible, just a thought.

I like that idea.... I think there will always be someone getting through it tho... instead of typing "torrent" they would type "t0rr3nt"??

Interesting tho... mrt? Smile

well that's a smart way for saying you want the user db to be closed Razz
But again the general topic of this forum will always attract ppl who are only looking for one thing, and who will never bother for rules and the only way to avoid these new members is in fact to close the userdb.

I have a better idea though, new members have to idle for one week in the chan first and take part in the conversations there (and klick on ever link), this way they'll get scared and run away Smile

Another possibility would be to make users that have less than, lets say 10 posts or so, are not able to create a new thread, just post in existing ones.

That's just so evil, hehe. Poor newbs shouldn't reside in that flame hell. Just let them stay a while on the board without any post rights so they get the picture of what to and what not to do.

man i just don't see how things are that bad, and i am tired of people jumping the bandwagon on calling worldnews a flame forum, its JUST not true... we have heated arguements and slight attacks on personalities , BUT i think most people who join the politic discussions are over 25 or so therefore we all take the swearing or mild flaming with an open mind and doesn't distract us from the real issues...

thanks

I dont think there is really flaming in that forum, its just a heated debate.
Theres no problem there, im not sure where you get that impression from?

It's direct flaming to other users is the bit that drags the board's level down. A simple question can be asked and the next post includes a sarcastic comment... is there any need for that? Smile

The only reason I see things getting by or "sliding" is because there is just to much to look at. If you go in pc games forum there are threads that are freakin massive and when big new games come out they are 3 pages deep in an hour. I am forced to skip these threads usually because weeding out the small posts becomes a huge choir that dosn't really accomplish much. The voting system referenced above sounds stupid. We have 1 already for voting on movies and that isn't going well. Letting the public judge someones post is just plain not good. Instead of someone flaming another because the first dude was wrong and the other guy proved him wrong the first action that person is going to do is vote him a lower level so the second guy has a better chance of getting booted or something. Remember we are dealing with kids in mind due to the anonymity when given such resources as a PC http://www.penny-arcade.com/view.php3?date=2004-03-19&res=l is my best example Smile
