I don't understand what they mean.
Quote: | EA will start with its stable IP such as FIFA, Madden, Battlefield, Need for Speed, The Sims, Tetris, Dragon Age. "We fully intend to make these properties into year-round businesses that lead their sectors across a range of platforms," Riccitiello said.
It is about time EA ditches the mandatory annual FIFA, Madden and other sports titles and adopt a continuous update cycle for their graphics, gameplay and players rooster. |
So will they release annual sequels or not? I am confused?

from what I understand is that they'll release an IP then routinely release DLC/expansions over the years that improve GFX and introduces gameplay changes.
Digital Downloads, no physical retail = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's unlikely they will abandon retail right now (this practice may begin with the new consoles, but right now? nope), and it's unlikely that they'll be able to release huge content updates on consoles.
In fact this inability to do so is why Valve hasn't updated TF2 on the 360 with the content they are constantly adding on the PC version.
So it can't mean that.

In a way, it's good news. But if it's the same crap all over with just a different appearance then fuck you EA.

The way I understand it, they indent to sell you a monthly/quarterly/yearly FIFA or Madden subscription that is updated regularly with real-life player transfers and new features with larger updates.

Makes sense, Madden is the same every year except for a roster update I guess they finally faced reality, we suck at real sequels because in reality they are really updates.

That model actually makes sense for sports games, IF the original gets a fair price (which I highly doubt). If they sell teh base game for 25-30 or so and do some optional quarterly updates for a cheap price (which I doubt too), it'd be reasonable. I however do not see how such a thing would work for games like DA. Release a game and release a shitload of DLCs for 4-5 years?

i will explain it to you .... have you seen World of Warcraft ? or any type of MMO ? after some time you download 1 gig patches to improve the visuals , gameplay ,add new content
just imagine you buy Fifa 2011 that will be the final FIFA game you will ever buy and it will be upgraded with new graphics , features , every 3 months ...
plain and simple explanation they want to turn all they Ips to MMO with monthly fees , see it as Phantasy Star Online... see it as EA's final solution to stop piracy of they products, EA's Fight against USED SALES [project 10$ anyone] and minimization of EA's logistic costs [oil prices are high]

Then they need to expand their EA Download Manager to a launcher, game content manager and subscriptions manager like Steam.
Woohoo, subscriptions and bloated shit, yippie ! Dragon Age 2 was so bad I wouldn't even finish it and it was fucking free. They should just focus on making better PC games. PC. P fucking C.

Anyone taking bets on how long John Riccitiello will stay CEO?
One thing is expecting MMORPG players to keep throwing their money at you (that alone only worked for a few companies and made hundreds bankrupt), another is expecting console or pc players to buy a subscription to madden/fifa/sims for a month and then expect them to keep paying you for rooster updates.

I think there's gonna be only initial purchase + subscription, not extra DLC.
Wait, wait, as I was typing that I changed my mind. They could do that, they're shameless !

And I explained this is not possible or convenient on consoles. They can't be shipping multigig content updates for all their products each year.

Realistically there's no chance they won't make Fifa 2012, 2013, 2014, ..
Fifa 11 sold 12 million units.. they might introduce a subscription model for each annual Fifa release, but to actually stop releasing a new Fifa each year? Nope.
I imagine it might be something like AV companies do. Say, you buy Kaspersky 11, the license allows you to receive updates for 1 year. After it expires, you can either renew it to continue to be protected by new threats, or you can buy Kaspersky 12 that will also have new features.

They could on the PS3, they dont have a update size limit, but they couldnt on the Xbox360 because the size of updates are limited (unless something has changed recently)
Still its kinda irrelevant (IMHO) as it would be classed as DLC and not a game update, so they could slap a 8gig update up if they so wanted.

So you will be paying for the subscription AND the DLC?
Besides if they do huge 3+ GB "DLC" updates people won't like that. It's not convenient to have 3+ GB updates for Fifa, Madden, Battlefield, NFS, each year on consoles.
The whole thing doesn't make any sense, unless we are talking about trivial updates. Like pay $x/year and receive all DLCs we make for this product in this year for free.
Said DLC could be 10 new guns, 5 new maps and 10 new skins.

Not firmware or DLC / GOD | my point was EA back in the days of Battlefield 2 made shit like Booster Packs sold on CDs... and your point was Updates on XBLA server are limited in space and times... and my counter point is they could release those booster packs as a GAME ON DEMAND , this service has no space limit only time limit or sell a DVD with this PATCH

sooner or later games Publishers will be forcing online , you would have to have it to play it [UBISOFT PC model... SONY new Securom 7/8, Tages Pro etc...]
