What is wrong with google these days.

When ever I search for something like a washing machine or maxtor hard drive or nearly any "product" all I get is this pricegrabber and dealtime type crap and auto generated pages with lists of useless links or consumer review pages with no reviews and more useless links.

What search engine do u guys use?

I use mostly Google... But when I can´t find what I want...
Here it goes what I use Wink

I need a few good hits fast (e.g., organization's homepage, popular sites for a topic)
Google - largest index results ranked by general popularity with "blind spots." with cached copy when site unavailable.
Yahoo!Search - redesigned search and index
AltaVista

I need to compare results quickly before I investigate them further.
ZapMeta - metasearch Quick View previews each page within your results; turn on "Result Snapshots" (set preferences) to preview thumbnails of sites.
ProFusion - A good MetaSearch Engine

I need to organize and refine my results.
Combine major engine results (metasearch) clustered by topics. Select keywords to pinpoint your search further.
* Clusty - ranks by relevance (like Google) and clusters results hierarchically (Vivisimo technology). Tabs include results from blogs, Wikipedia
* Surf Wax - identify promising results using preview summary ("SiteSnap"); see context of key words on the page ("ContextZooming"), add "Focus Words" to narrow next search.
* Ez2Find - gathers results from top engines (results include some invisible web information)
* Dogpile - "fetch" and clustered results (Vivisimo) attracts younger students.

I need a template to focus my search.
Templates for "Advanced Search" prompt you to include or exclude words and phrases, limit by domain and language.
Teoma Advanced adds geographic region, and more page update choices. Google Advanced adds file format and pages containing a numeric range.

SO GET UP! ... and FORGET THE PAST!

I've always found what I'm looking for with google. You need to isolate the search and put up more search options and more key words.

I've never had any probs with Google. It always gives me what I want within the first page or two. Haven't used another search engine in the last 3 years. This may or may not be the case with you, but I tend to find that people who can't find what they're looking for usually don't know how to refine their searches properly.

Subject reminded me: Used google for quite some time last night trying to find help on disassembling a KitchenAid Stand Mixer. Finding much more pertinent stuff using Yahoo already. Google is seeming commercialized.

The spam sites on Google are getting worse.

If I want the technical specifications on a hard drive or something like that, and for whatever reason I don't know the web address of the vendor, I will Google for something like seagate st2300a specifications (model number made up there Wink ) and usually get loads of Kelkoo, DealTime and other directory pages with no relevant information on it at all.

They need to sort it out or eventually they will lose their market share.

Also if you want an exact search put quotes around it, then it will only match that entire string.

I've actually noticed the increase in these sites too, but it isn't googles fault, it's not like they're paid to make them appear...

It is Google's fault in a way, in that it is their algorithm that these websites are abusing to get top rankings.

Google has always been about relevant search results - they are no longer delivering these for many search queries, so their algorithms need to be worked on.

Of course, they'll still get abused so the question is really whether it is worth the bother. It makes my job as a web developer and SEO guy a nightmare though.

hehe yeah, it's their fault in that sense, but then again, i'd imagine pretty much any algorithm would allow an exploit, unless they filtered certain sites, but I mean, who decides what sites to filter... maybe they should give users that option... would make it cleaner

It's this very same algoritm which has made them the most popular search engine in the world. As with many other IT companies, they are a victim of their own success. Once you become the leader of a particular field then people will try to exploit your business. A perfect example of this is Microsoft - even though they get a lot of bad press about security it wouldn't be half as bad if so many people didn't use Windows. If Linux had the same popularity then I'm sure it would be exploited almost as much. It's just the way it is.
