A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. For it to be classified sci-fi it atleast have to be somewhat believable in (fictional) science. This would be better off with the classification of fantasy drama.

Well some people think sci-fi as a whole is a 'just' subgenre of fantasy. Wink

I think you're referring to hard sci-fi, where the creators usually at least try to adhere to real scientific phenomena (or at the very least have a consistent and logical basis on how the fictional scientific ideas presented work in their universe - no breaking those rules whenever it'd be convenient) - whereas in 'soft' sci-fi science pretty much works like magic does in high fantasy.

good to know we're shifting star trek and star wars into the fantasy genre and not calling them sci-fi anymore... im sure the nerds everywhere wont rage about that one.

obviously i think its a stupid thing to say this isnt sci fi. i agree with the classification of hard sci-fi which is the attempt to try and create something more possible and realistic, but everything else can just as happily be called sci-fi no matter how batshit impossible it is.. i wouldnt bother calling any type of sci-fi 'soft' though... its all fair game as just standard sci-fi.

People have argued about Star Wars ever since A New Hope was originally released, so it'd be nothing new.

Would you consider "Moon" a sci fi movie? Its heavy drama, but still totally sci fi in my opinion ... not that it really matters haha

yes i consider moon to be sci-fi, though id fit it more in the hard sci-fi category, because it makes an attempt to be reality based, but regardless, definately sci-fi

Yeah, scifi doesnt really have to be 2001 or Aliens...it has a really huge amount of different settings.
Some people would claim that the only true scifi is the kind of scifi Arthur C.Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein introduced us to...(the kind of scifi i like actually) - but it might aswell be just something completely different.
The difference between fantasy and scifi can sometimes be hard to detect really (Michael Moorcock shows this really well when he makes parallel universes with his chars. Jherek Carnelian in The Dancers at the end of the time and Elric Of Melnibone are a good example when he decides to merge them.

shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.
