A cinematic puzzle platformer about being a kid and caring for a little brother in a chilling 1950s dystopia.

Monochroma is a cinematic puzzle platformer developed in Turkey. It’s a game about being a kid, growing up with a little brother that needs your help, facing obstacles, and solving unique puzzles in an industrial-alchemic world.

In the words of Orçun Nişli, the game’s creative director . . .

"Platformer games are about our childhood. Think about it for a moment. What we do in a platformer is what we used to do when we were children playing at the playground. We’re adults now and don’t need to push a box and jump over it. We never climb wooden ladders or swing on a rope. In Monochroma, I try to celebrate everyone’s childhood by setting the tutorial at a playground. It was my way of saying ‘thanks’ to all the developers that carry childhood memories within and keep the genre alive."

Also a demo is available

Developer Nowhere Studios has announced that its PC project Monochroma will release on Steam on May 28, 2014. It already managed to win some awards, such as the Best Independent Game at GameX.

Monochroma is a darkened puzzle platform game, provided in side-scrolling fashion with heavily shaded models and environments. Its world is mostly presented in black and white, along with red tones for extra effect.

This game is set in an alternate 1950’s world with a dystopian setting. A corporation, which is always behind every evil deed in video games, is setting this tone of a dreary mechanized environment that slowly encroaches on more rural ideals.

As such, Monochroma will be set in four chapters across environments such as dirty ghettos, sewers, industrial areas and even a city-sized zeppelin. This is accompanied by some sullen jazz tunes, in true noir fashion.

For its story, the puzzle platformer will use two brothers, of whom the player controls the bigger one. Big brother has to protect their younger sibling, who was injured and can’t walk on their own anymore.

This is also used to make the logic puzzles in locations a little trickier. For instance, a platform can be inaccessible, due to carrying the smaller child, but temporarily leaving them behind and getting around can provide a new path.

Developer Nowhere Studios is said to use their childhood memories and the Turkish Gezi Protests as an inspiration for the game’s story.

Played it around 40-50 minuets just to get the feeling of the game.

One of the biggest problems of this game is its visuals. I'm not talking about the greysacle itself, but rather how it was used, along with some other elements. First, it is dark, Almost pitchblack even on max brightness on my old good CRT even in completely dark room. I had a lot of issues figuring out where to go, what is beside me, etc. But what make it worse - bloom and slight DoF effect, combined with aliasing. Jesus Christ, it makes my eyes bleed. if someone knows how to disable these 2 on Unity and enable AA - let me know.

Gameplay as well isn't anything spectacular. Imagine very simplified Trine - something like that. Altho, as I mentioned, I was in the game for just about a hour, so may be later there will be better puzzles.
