Hi guys,
I'm handing my old Notebook over to my mom to replace her ultra slow Athlon.
Core2Duo 2x2GHz
2GB RAM
120GB HD
GeForce 7600m
This should be much faster than her old machine. Now coming to the OS. All my private shit is still on the HD, so I'll copy over all my stuff. But Windows 7 Professional is already on it installed but I'd have to make a format to get it into a clean state (ah windows 8 feature, exist in windows 7?).
So I was thinking about installing a linux distribution instead of windows 7. She is a total noob and only does some surfing on facebook NOTHING else. Firewalls, antivirus etc should not bug her at all.
I thought about ubuntu with the new UI or maybe linux mint. Or would you advice me to just stay with windows? (I'd have to find the key again and the DVD/image)

If all she does is surf the internet and other basic tasks, why would you bother her with this useless (for her) change from what she already knows? (This is one of the bigger problems of Windows 8.)
I have tried it with my mom, and it doesn't bode well. Let her be with what she knows.

Stick with Win 7 IMO.
Finding the key is shit easy -> http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
I have Win7 running on a Turion x64, 1.5GB DDR and an ATI 1100 GPU/Chipset set up for my parents and that stuff flies!
Have MSSE installed and along with the router firewal + Chromel it's more than enough to keep it safe.
Except on 2-3 occasions, my dad is one of those "What's this that just popped up? *click*" so when he visits new sites there's always a risk...

Depends on the person.
I have put Ubuntu onto peoples old machines when they just use them for web browsing and its been fine for most, but if their is a chance they will want to run a windows program its not worth it.
As a linux user myself I would say slap Ubuntu on it, However if she knows Windows then it may be easier just to dump a copy of Windows on there.
At the end of the day anyone should be able to click on Chromium / Firefox regardless ofthe OS
I would pick something other than Unity though (Maybe L E or MATE), Unity is fucking shocking almost as bad as Metro

You mean the Dumbarse sidebar that is the main part of it ?

Ignore that fucking thing, you can almost completely disable it, I only see it when I hit my Windo..err "Super" key to use the lens.
On-topic btw: just stick with Win7. She's used to it, why change?

Nope she uses xp on that athlon and she never used win 7. And you can't really say that she is used to anything either I guess she'd have more problems if she was forced to use another browser
Installing 7 is more complicated for me thats why I thought about linux in the first place

Why is installing 7 complicated?
It is the easiest thing, much easier than say XP or Ubuntu (less bla bla questions).

Why install Linux for you MUM?!!?!
A MUM should be sat with Win7 or OSX, not a hobby OS for people with geek skills.

or x86 android 4.0?
and you could have w7/linux in dualboot for when you're visiting and have the simplified OS as default on 1 second timer for her

I'm also gonna give my old laptop to my mom, and I'm thinkin' about linux too. Pretty much the same situation, so I'd say go for linux. Just need to find the easiest window manager for her, maybe a custom kde...
