Yakuza 3
- Official web page: Click
- Publisher: Sega
- Developer: Amusement Vision
- Genre: Action Adventure
- Release date: March 2010 (NA, EU), February 2009 (JP)
- Plot:
Quote: | Yakuza 3 takes a departure from the first two games with its choice of setting: instead of focusing on the gritty cityscape of Tokyo and Osaka, it switches gears and sends Kiryu to the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa), where he runs the Asagao orphanage with his adoptive daughter Haruka who accompanied him in both Yakuza, Yakuza 2 and in the movie version. The Asagao orphanage is on a land that is owned by Shigeru Nakahara, the boss of a local yakuza clan known as the Ryudo Ikka. Nakahara is under pressure from the country's government to sell the land which is planned to become a seaside resort. Kiryu once again finds himself in a series of tough situations. |
Gameplay:
Quote: | The gameplay is pretty similar to the previous Yakuza titles though it adds more mini games and four brand new basic gameplay elements to it. Those main features are listed below:
* Seamless Battle:
The Seamless Battle is a streaming data-based loading-free system that allow the game to directly connect the adventure mode and the battle mode (called "Kenka") without the usual loading black screen.
* Chase Battle:
Chase Battle is a new battle mode which replaces the regular brawling (Kenka) with a running sequence set in a certain map. Both chaser and chased have a running gauge that decreases as the character runs and or is hurt by someone or something on his way. When the running gauge is empty the exhausted character stops the chase. Somewhere in the game a secondary character, the Afro-American Japanese Mack, will train Kiryu to improve his running performance.
* Revelation:
Revelation allows Kiryu Kazuma to learn new Heat Actions in the adventure mode, it is rather similar to the system introduced in the previous game Ryu ga Gotoku: Kenzan !. This time Kiryu uses his cell phone built-in camera to record new moves and techniques. These are acquired through hints spotted in First Person View. Learned Heat Actions are posted on Kiryu's his personal blog, called Kamuroblog.
* First Person View:
When pressing the Sixaxis/Dual Shock 3's R3 button during the adventure mode the standard third person view switches to a brand new first person view mode. This perspective allows a better observation of the streets and people as well as posters reading. First Person View is disabled in some indoor places. |

I tried the demo quite some time ago from the Japan PSN store. Was fun and will probably pick this one up when it makes it over to Europe.

I wonder what's holding up Sega to bring it over to Xbox 360 as well.

It's Japanese game and PS3 is more popular there so that explains why it's primarily a PS3 title, doesn't explain why wouldn't they port it to 360 for western market, seeing as 360 games usually sell better in NA/EU. O well, maybe they don't like money

I'm sure Sony is giving them money, or at least, shouldering some of the burden of the games development/publication/marketing in return for exclusivity.

a better question is why it needs to be 50 gb in the first place.

No, developers of 360 JRPGs got support from MS and these games still got ported to PS3 and MS money was used in porting to PS3 process.
It's hard to understand why they don't make games like Demon's Souls multiplatform. That game sold miserably in JAP but pretty good in the west. Now if there was 360 version too, that's 2-3x more the sales right there.

Very promising write-up on the Western release of Yakuza 3 at Eurogamer. Doesn't indicate whether anything was cut from the game but that's probably because it's not an actual review, either way check it out here. The Japanese version got an 8/10 on Eurogamer so it should be good.

Some form of European demo up on PSN apparently. Not sure whether it's the same one the Japanese got.

Game is more than a little off-kilter for sure
Having never played the originals it was all new to me. Combat was really difficult at first too and I will admit I had to switch it to easy. I'm still not sure I know what I'm doing (aside from button mashing) but it is a lot of fun with the wide variety of weapons, kill moves and specials involving the scenery. It's a lot like the old school Japanese beat 'em ups, so it's satisfying. Once you get outside into the streets and enter some of the buildings it's... interesting... to say the least. Got quite a chuckle using the arcade machines, including that claw machine (I forget what they are called).
Didn't have time to finish the demo, and whilst it didn't blow me away it seems like a fun game if you could get into it (which a limited demo like this prohibits). Will be interested to hear what people familiar with the originals think.

my first yakuza game too...I love the theme, the environs. And I love hearing japanese, wish they had added audio to the non-cutscene dialogues also. But I am not a big fan of the old school brawlers, and the game seems pretty hard at normal. I may rent it when it comes out, but the preorder has been cancelled.

I think they delayed the Japanese release as well. Major disappointment just thinking about it (though there is Heavy Rain, Yakuza 3 and MLB 10 to beef up March so it's still a busy couple of months)

Yeah it seemed odd in such a hyper-realistic setting and with 3D characters. I think it's fine if it fits the style but it seemed cheap and tacked on as if they couldn't be bothered to fully voice those parts of the game - and it was really difficult to tell who was talking because there were no portraits and stuff. The UI was generally poor as well.
I dunno though, the game was still strangely enjoyable.

Graphics aren't amazing, or consistent for that matter (I felt like some pre-rendered cut scenes have worse graphics than normal gameplay for example) and it's a bit sloppy and rough around the edges - with a UI that is big, nasty and PS2'era'ish. On the other-hand you enter a shop or restaurant and all the little details are there. The conceit works even if the quality overall is not stellar.
Ah balls. Looks like SEGA are being their usual brilliant selves. They've cut content from the game. Not sure what the content actually entailed (gameplay wise) but something to do with hostess girls has been removed as well as a quiz on Japanese history. Way-to-go!

ok so they removed hostess clubs (but not strip clubs) and japanese history trivia sessions .... I don't care whatsoever.
Just be happy it comes out in english at all...
I don't even know what a hostess club is (I do now.. thanks wikipedia) and I wouldn't want to do japanese history trivia, because that only makes sense for a japanese audience anyway.
Buy the damn thing so they have a reason to give us Yakuza 4 too!
