Right here goes , last year i updated my ps3 but after i did all games and bluray films would display a black screen and i would have to reset the ps3 ( losing all saves and such) after a reset i could play all again but couldnt connect to PSN as it was asking for an update, so i left it as i was about to jailbreak it anyway.
Fast forward a few months i decided to update to the latest firmware as i have just bought a new 3D tv and wanted to use it to watch 3D blurays films ( wasnt really using it to play jailbroken games anyway ) so after i updated i got the same black screen problem and had to reset the ps3 to play films and games but now i cant connect to PSN anymore as it asks for an update again.
You might try resetting the video settings from a powered off ps3:
Just hold down the power button until you hear the second beep, then release and your video should just pop back up and you can reconfigure your audio/video settings.
