Do you know what the opportunities are in PC gaming? They’re probably better then you think – the PC gaming market is much bigger than consoles, both in installed base and in money made.

What’s interesting to see is just how much larger the PC base is than any of the consoles. To tell you the truth, I really hadn’t realized how large a difference it is until I put this chart together.

Enthusiast PCs are 62% of the total market, and there are 4PCs out there for every Wii, 7 PCs for every Xbox360 and 8 PCs for every PS3. Wow.

Hard to believe that, tbh.. For every person that has an enthusiast PC I see there are 5 persons with cheap-ass netbooks.

For PCs, we took 2 years cumulative sales of DX10+ discrete graphics cards to estimate the number of enthusiast PCs that are capable of playing most games.

And here is why the stats are incorrect. There are many cheap dx10+ cards that cannot even compete with consoles.. and there are millions of those cards sold. These aren't enthusiast PCs.. not at all.

This.

And besides, aren't these news tied with the fact that Intel just entered that PC Gaming Alliance bullshit group a couple of weeks ago?

I know what you mean. I ask my friends after they've bought a (ready-made) brand new computer their graphics card, and the first digit almost manages to make me jealous at how new their graphics card is, until I hear them end their phrase with something along the lines of 100, 200 or 300. Or even 500.

Enthusiast PCs my ass.

Well, it's not the 'fan pressure' they're falling for. It's the potential profits. It's not as if porting a game is extremely expensive, especially not with the crappy ports we're seeing. Thus they'll simply open themselves up to a new market at very little cost. Pretty much can't avoid profiting from it.

consolekids will think OMAHGAWD MAH PS720 DOES 1080p PHER HOUR when it actually doesn't and it barely runs anything that isnt tailored to it's smallest piece to work properly.
Arma 2 , STALKER (even with it's bad coding) or Crysis would probably set current consoles on fire if they'd try to run them on medium and 720p.

Even excluding MMOs and F2P games PC still generated more revenue than the Wii in 2009.

In 2010 is no different:

Most Facebook games use the successful recipe of Free-To-Play, Pay-To-Advance-Faster-Or-Get-Unique-Items. You'd be surprised at how many people actually do pay.

enthusiast doesnt have to mean 'top of the line updated monthly and overclocked 200%', but it can also mean that its a pc built for gaming (as opposed to being just a workstation). while some of those gaming pcs use cheaper, weaker hardware or are simply out of date, that doesnt mean they arent gaming PCs. being able to run new games on medium/high is good enough to be called a gaming PC in my eyes.
i am a proud owner of a cheapass netbook and an out of date gaming PC!

Lol. Wonder how many of their "enthusiast" machines are business machines with a 8400 / 4350 stuck in for the once in a blue moon it's needed for a presentation.

Or Grandma's media centre made out of your extremely old parts etc etc.

Not to mention if they're counting just sales, how many since upgraded cards stuck in a spare parts cupboard are they counting as an "enthusiast" machine?

Good luck trying to play (for example) with a Geforce 8100, because it's a dx10 card and intel labels it "enthusiast".

Everything bellow the performance of a console, is not a machine for gamers in my book.

And because your SLI 9600GT can still run games well a single 8400GS will too? Not sure what your point is?

SLI 9600Gt is far from the lowest end.

Does fetch up another good point but, in Intels stats you have 2 enthusiast PC's as it's just going by card sales Smile

Clearling hating for the sake of hating. They clearly stated in the article that to their best estimation. You might want to 180 that shit and think about how negative you are as a person when you clearly only read to see and understand what you want out of the context. Time to take a positive aproach and read it for what it is and make your own judjment without having to feel superior by ripping into someone elses research. It was a good read by the way.
