depends on what you're after...there are swap discs which require you to rape the drive mechanisms, that's about it for non-modchip solutions. another option would be a memory card with hdloader, but you need to get those files on the MC first, which means either using those swapdiscs or having a friend with a modded ps2

Just buy a used PS2 with modchip from ebay. Now you might say hey wait a second I thought you can't sell/buy modded systems at ebay but you know what? You can! Just look for descriptions like "with extra" or "runs everything" etc. and ask the seller directly if you want to be sure.
I did this a few months ago and got a PS2 slim with Modbo chip (Matrix Infinity clone) for around 50 EUR.

A friend of mine has a PS2 and he asked me if I can mod it.
Is there a memory card exploit that can be used for playing backup dvds ? So I don't have to rape the dvd tray ?

yes, there is, you need some way to get the exploit on your memcard though and a ps1 game to trigger it.
never did that one, so google at your leisure

Yeah google for FreeMCBoot. But you have to patch the games and I think not every game works. If you ask me it's not worth all this crap when you can get a whole console with a chip for 50 EUR.
