Am I the only one that, when he hears shmup thinks of games like dunno R-Type, Raptor etc. and not the "modern" danmaku versions like Ikaruga or the complete Touhou series?

I enjoy shmups, been replaying Jets 'n Guns recently still fun as hell but for the love of god I can't stand any more bullet hell. Ikaruga broke me in that regard :/
Gimme a shmup I can enjoy not one I have to play with the concentration as if I was performing heart surgery.

When I hear "shmup" -- I instantly call to mind memories of designing my own games in the C64 "Shoot'Em'Up Construction Kit" Very Happy


... and yes, shmups are - for me - Raptor, Tyrian, R-Type, Super Aleste/Space Megaforce, UN Squadron, Truxton, Thunderforce ... those kinds of games. Bullet hell games are just... blegh.

I don't really consider these new games to be shmups. They are all about pattern memorization and having good reactions with your hands, not the shmup kind of gameplay you'd see in Tyrian or Major Stryker.
