Hi

Hopefully someone can help

I downgraded my 3.50 phat 80gb PS3 to 3.41 and got JB working.
Then I realised the hard drive wouldnt be big enough do I bought a new one (a 640gb)
I swapped out the old hard drive, stuck the new one in and expected it to ask me to format but instead it asked me for the 3.41 system software before it would attempt to format the drive.

Do I need to download this and reinstall?
And if so where from as I remember seeing a few versions kicking around? :s

Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like you have one of the newer models, the ones lacking backwards compatibility and the 256MB NAND. Your PS3 stores a percentage of your GameOS/firmware on the HDD it self, so when you take the drive out to replace for a larger one part of that firmware is lost - necessitating in the machine asking you to provide the current FW PUP.

Here you go: http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php/Ps3OsRels

The one you specifically want is the "v3.41 - Silent Second Release" version. Choose the one that matches your region (US/EU/JP) Grab it and then stick the PS3UPDAT.PUP onto a USB stick in the following path;

USB:\PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

Cheers mate, ur a star! had a feeling that was the case, wasnt sure tho.

Ive tried the link for the EU version and get this

The requested URL /update/ps3/image/eu/2010_0727_00c835be718fc3d5f793e130a2b74217/PS3UPDAT.PUP was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Mediafire link goes to one but not sure which, are they all in the same package perhaps?

It seems that all the files are the same for each region :s
Will it matter?

According to that site, yeah; they're all the same. I used to wonder why they specifically labeled them EU/US/JP, but it doesn't matter - they're identical. Grab the one from MF since Sony blocked direct downloading of FW now.

I've had it with the wretched machine.

tried three different versions of 3.41 and one 3.50

and everytime it can not find any firmware on the usb stick.

first it finds it then goes off formatting the hard drive and at 100 % it suddenly can't find the firmware anymore.

It's more than likely your USB stick then mate, or you've got the folder structure wrong on the update. Create a folder on the stick called PS3. Then open it and create a new folder called UPDATE. Open THAT and put the ps3updat.pup file inside it. Then put the USB in the PS3 when it asks you during HDD transplant.

Oh and don't try and use 3.50, you'll lose the ability to JB then and you'll have to downgrade.

well I updated the ps3 before I tried to upgrade the hard drive and at that moment the ps3 could find my usb stick....but when upgrading the hard drive it finds the update goes preparing the hard drive and then can't find the update.... I wanna kill that update at this point xD

I also updated to the 3.50 to see if the problem was solved with that one again with old hard drive the ps3 saw the update but when replacing the hard drive it did not see the usb stick...

On a side note but related, I was told in no uncertain terms (by a supposed expert on modding) that once your PS3 has been updated past 3.41 its impossible to backtrack. If not then how exactly do I downgrade?

You can update as far as 3.50 and still downgrade, but no higher for now. There's info on PSX-Scene about how to downgrade, I'll dig it out for you later.

Then I guess you'd be best off waiting a couple weeks and seeing what turns up. You have a few options; Await KaKa<restofdumbnamenobodycanremember>'s 3.55 downgrader, which he claims is working but he wants to tweak it before releasing, use Geohot's 3.55 CFW, which works but can't run any homebrew right now and there's a good chance will never run backups ... or lastly, see if anyone puts out a shady 3.55 that supports backups.

inserted the original hard drive in the ps3 and it went on like a charm with the firmware on the cd
