Xenonauts is an upcoming PC strategy title inspired by the classic X-Com series of strategy games.

Announcement came after 2K's own, about butchering and simplifying yet another legendary franchise.

Release date: Q4 2010.

This looks pretty good. But the release date is end of 2010 and they still don't have any in-battle media up ?

I don't think they can meet the release date. Cool concept though !

Looks very interesting indeed. Smile
Too bad there's nothing really concrete yet, though:

We weren't planning to release details about our game for another couple of months, until we had some trailers of the game in action to show off, but this seemed a great time for us to pop our heads up and say hello to the gaming world. Sadly this means you'll all have to wait a little while for in-game footage, but rest assured it will be coming as soon as possible!

Seeing the screenshot on the main page (geoscape) reminded of the first time i ran x-com many many years ago and starting to build up the first base, selling useless equipment, buying a rocket launcher, explosive ammo...
I also remember how i hated terror sites, because sometimes aliens were hard to find. Plus too many dead civilians were not cool.

Christ, X-com rocks!

Ahhh terror sites in the beginning were always so hard core.. Usually there was a cyberdisc right in front of the ramp killing a few of your guys rightin the beginning. Surprised

From the description - me wants. But time will tell if they can deliver what they promised.

I was always scared shitless wondering if the chryssalis that i hear will have enough AP (and that motherfucker was ultraswift and fast) to kill off my squad or will i be able to set him on fire (he is vulnerable to incendiary ammo).
Same goes for any mission with ethereals - those psionic motherfuckers were a huge pain in the ass. Sectoids weren't so potent in terms of psionic powers.

Also shooting a muton in the back and watching him turn around towards my soldier that shot him always made me pale.

Why not pre-order it and play it now for less money if you intend to buy it anyway?

Preview http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/10/01/xenonauts-preview/ looks sweet.

Lookin' pretty smart, though the art isn't quite at the level of X-COM apocalypse.

This really does look to be the closest we'll get to a real X-COM sequel. (wonder how many times that line has been said..)
The terrain is destructable right?.. if an X-COM clone doesn't manage this feat, it can burn in a pit of fire. 'Official' X-COM included!

With 2K’s (let’s put it mildly) divisive XCOM FPS fast approaching, there just isn’t a better time for Xenonauts to exist.

Indeed, it's a breath of fresh air and we desperately need it

PayPal fucks another indie studio/game Sad They fucked Project Zomboid, they fucked Space Pirates and Zombies, they fucked Minecraft... and now they've fucked Xenonauts.

i wish i could enjoy the game, the art style is so bad from my pov. I really dont like it. I actually think the original 2d art of the original game looks better then what they made. I expect at least jagged alliance 2 2D world standards. Imagine randomly generated maps looking as good as jagged alliance 2. The only thing i like is their world map, alltough i do miss the rotating globe.

Just dont like the art style direction they took at all Sad

I think googlecheckout has the same issues, according to the guys at Xenonauts.

Yeah, the team behind Project Zomboid had the same issue with G.Checkout --- which is why they had to sell the "worst games in the world" lol.

As some of you may be aware, we have been having some problems with Paypal. These problems involve them cutting off our only income stream and then freezing the $4,300 in the account for 180 weeks before they return it.

The community has been very helpful during this period, both in terms of the community around the our project and the indie scene as a whole. There have been numerous suggestions about how we could circumvent the Paypal ban on pre-orders, but I was never particularly keen on going back to them. Fundamentally we were always going to struggle with their rules, I think – I was much more interested in finding a solution that was better aligned with where we were going as a project. This gave us two main options – Desura, or the new Humble Indie Bundle store widget.

The HIB store widget was effectively exactly what we had before, but with lower transaction fees and the shield of another (better known) organisation between us and Paypal. Desura, for those who are not aware, is effectively an indie version of Steam owned by the people who run IndieDB/ModDB. I think both would have been good partners, but we decided on Desura because it allows us to outsource the pre-order process (saving me time) and will make it easier to actually deliver the final game when it is released – the plan is Desura or Steam keys for each pre-orderer.

We’re currently working on integrating Desura with vBulletin so pre-orderers can get forum badges for buying the game, but pre-orders should be up again relatively soon, so sit tight. We’re announcing this on this site rather than Xenonauts.com because we’re having problems with that – the frontpage is frozen as it was when the site crashed from the Reddit traffic a couple of weeks back, so we’re migrating over here and will be replacing the current Xenonauts.com with something a bit more snazzy.

All pre-orderers will recieve a Desura key sent to their Paypal email addresses when the Desura pre-orders go live, just as a heads-up.

180 weeks?
That's three and a half years, what the hell are paypal playing at these days and is it even legal?

So, since the thread has been found...
The game is pretty much in progress - a lot of features work now, the graphics are ok (god, i couldn't play UFO:ET, even the gold edition, because of the graphics).
If someone would buy some copies (though i'd like to clearly highlight - this is alpha, a work in progress, though most of the features work as intended already, there are - some placeholders, CTDs are not rare, ufopedia is mostly empty, research was just unlocked with only some of the technologies available, 4:3 is not fully supported, though i play in 1280x1024, etc, etc) - that would be great, since Chris England got hit pretty hard by the Firaxis XCOM announcement, and it would be cool if they could finish the game faster.
Here are some screenshots:

No, we have no bears on the streets here in Russia.

Tested a build of this some week or so ago, it's quite promising albeit as was said it's still in progress, I was impressed though.
(And then my team all died on the first mission as it has been quite some time since I last played a game like this. Razz )
