I've put EFLC at the top because I did not see that coming, at all. TBoGT is absolutely fantastic. Lara Croft I just found highly amusing, it's been a while since I actively set out to get unlockable shit so that says enough for me personally. FO: NV was also a very pleasant surprise after disliking FO3 so much.
Mafia 2 doesn't need an explanation really. Probably the most hyped game in the 6 months before it, and it turned out to be a weaksauce buggy derivative of its former glory, spiced up with bullshitX to make it a bit more ridiculous

New Vegas I guess. Followed by Alpha Protocol because it was different and unique in its own way. Most of the major titles have been good enough but not great imo.

Suprise of the year, well, there are more that I remember:
Assassin's Creed II
Darksiders
Lara Croft and the Gurdian of Light
Yeah, Darskiders was something very good for me, great voice acting, nice atmoshpere given also by the art style. I know the gameplay wasn't original but that made it awesome, it had a lot of good things took from other games and brought together in one game. Assassin's Creed 2 because it was what the first game wanted to be, it was polished perfectly too. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, well, this one really was a suprise. I only began to play it about 1-2 weeks ago and it's pure fun. It doesn't want to be a game from the Tomb Raider series so the gameplay doesn't mind me. A very nice platformer.
Fail of the year, I have three here:
Arcania (NOT) Gothic 4 (no need to comment here I guess  )
Lost Planet 2 (I loved the first one, but this one was such a mess, didn't even play it just for about 10 minutes)
Mafia II (played just the demo, that much of a fail was for me )
