ps3 can play xvid and dvix avis but it can't play older codecs used for avi movies , it also can play wmv ... same with avis that have 5.1 of ac3 sound ,ps3 has problems with those creating a out-of-synch experience your movies must be joint-stereo , stereo , mono or simple put have 2chanel sound to have sound in your avis
o and GeordieRacer to this day the best mp4 ps3 converter is Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate 6 works with all formats even mkv , it even uses Nvidia GPU to convert/compress faster ...
edit :
The following types of files can be played under (Video) on your ps3.
* Memory Stick Video Format
* - MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* - MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
* MP4 file format
* - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
* MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
* MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
* MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
* MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
* AVI
* - Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
* - Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
