Hi,

Lately my DVD drive (LG GSA H44N) was acting strangely. It has difficulties finding the files that are on a DVD. It's kind of stuck doing noises (lens back and forth on short distance, really quickly).

DVD is OK, I tried it on another drive (also LG).

I thought: "my DVD drive is dead. Let's put the spare one I have here in the case"
-> same symptoms on the new drive. I also changed IDE cable but no improvement.

I thought: "then it must be the IDE cable"
-> changed the IDE cable: no improvement.

What could be wrong then?
Any idea?

PS: inb4 "buy SATA drive" Wink

If it's not the drive (firmware or such to update, dirty lens, failing hardware or such.) since you tested another drive and not the actual cable (As you exchanged that.)

It could be a bios setting for that IDE port though that's just a guess (Boot priority and the like shouldn't matter, unsure if one can adjust voltages like that, think it's only the PCI/PCIE ports.) and I don't think it's very likely, another possibility would be that the port itself is getting faulty but you'd need to test other hardware for that to be proven and don't try the main HDD or some such incase there's a chance it can damage the drive of course. Smile

EDIT: Those IDE drivers are "male" aren't they with the connector being "female" so perhaps pin related?

Thanks for the answer JBeckman. Indeed drives are male and the cable are females. I already checked the pins on the drive and on the MB and they all look fine. I'll have a look at the bios even if I do not really see why the settings would change by themselves, as the drive was working properly a few days ago.

I hate to suffer the consequences of other people's acts...
