Warhammer Online killed in action

MMORPG from Games Workshop and Climax axed; game's GM calls move a "painful decision."
After more than two years in the studio, Warhammmer Online was suddenly pulled from the development schedule today.

The game's general manager, Robin Dews, posted the following message on the official Warhammer Online Web site.

It reads in part:

"It is with a great deal of sadness that I … inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect. This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project. I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us."

Personally, I'm not that disappointed. I think the model of the game departed too much from the actual Warhammer game.

If these retards only just realised the cost of making a game after 2 years of development and telling people "this is gonna be the best ever, we are being so faithful to warhammer" then maybe it wasn't going to be that good anyway.

I play warhammer as a tabletop, and I wouldn't have played Warhammer Online cos the world was too small.

Its true. This game would have failed miserably, especially in an increasingly flooded market.

On a side note, I hope one day they release a true port of Warhammer (& 40k) to the computer. Where it plays as it does on the tabletop (aside from it rolling the dice for you). Let you pick all your forces, allow you to download new units and content and update rules given out in articles like Chapter Approved. Even allow you to choose the colors of your units and have a model builder for conversions so you can make unique models and units for hero's, Chaos etc. I would even subscribe to this.

As for the Warhammer Online, it just didn't look or feel like Warhammer from the things I read and saw of it. I'm glad it was shut down as it wouldn't be able to compete with WoW, EQ2 and upcoming MMO (like D&D). It would have given a poor impression of the fantastic setting they have made for the Warhammer world.
