..that is the question.

My father wants to buy the new VW Polo GTI, but the problem is that it only comes with the semi-auto DSG transmission. Now I've read about this transmission, and I know that it's really good at accelerating forward, but I also know that my father is a professional and aggressive driver, and that he likes to be in control of the gearbox, and I fear that the new DSG won't be enough involving for him.

The next best thing is the Schirocco 1.4 TSI with Manual, but it's 20hp less and 5000eur more..

Any comments on that gearbox?
I heard that it's annoying in traffic, what does that mean?
I know that sometimes when it's not prepared it might take up to 2 sec for it to shift.

I would go for Schirocco those 20hp less ain't that bad as it has a turbo that makes it probably faster then the polo GTI. And you will not see so many Schirocco's as you will see Polo's on the road that's a plus as well in my opinion. other then that the are both nice cars to see and to drive.
And the DSG transmission ain't that bad its just that you won't feel it going from first to second gear and so on, so its more comfortable to drive although it might have some delay when shifting from time to time.

Have driven them both and my choice would be the Schirocco for the reason that there aren't that many driving around.

Working by my brother at the moment so i am driving loads of different cars.

test drive them both , but if the dsg works nicely then that's the thing i'd go for
also , i hate turbo lag , i'd rather have way less hp than wait until the turbo kicks in

I'm assuming you haven't driven more modern turbo cars. Turbo lag is non-exsistant in cars like the GTI / Speed3/ WRX / Etc.

For a daily driver, I like having a turbo. Having 320 ft/lbs of torque (At the wheels) at only 2800RPM is outstanding, and at only 5000RPM's i'm making 290WHP.

If the car has a twin scroll or twin-turbo's then the downside of having to choose between a no-lag small turbo, or a high-lag big turbo is non-exsistant.

That new Porsche GT2RS has an incredibly flat torque curve throughout the entire band, and builds consistant HP all the way to redline, and it does it using twin variable scroll turbo's.

Both cars have TSI engine, supercharged and with turbo, so there is no turbo lag.

The Polo GTI has a 1.4 TSI 180hp

the Scirocco has a 1.6 TSI 160hp

The DSGs work quite well. Shift fast and crisp. But they aren't as fun or satisfying as actually moving a shift lever and working the gears yourself (provided the car has a nice feeling transmissions) and using a clutch. Nothing can replace that despite what Ferrari thinks Smile If he wants a more relaxing car that's a bit better than a regular automatic tranny though, the DSG is great.

The dual-clutch in the 458 Italia is unbeatable. Despite what you think. Wink

A manual tranny in the 458 just doesn't work. The car wasn't designed in such a way.

That's fine, I know performance wise they are superior to proper manual transmissions. Show me where I said they weren't. Driving is more than just fast lap times unless you are a race car driver though IMO.

1.6 TSI 160hp

Sounds better for the engine than 1.4 180HP

I agree, but the 458 is designed so the driver never has to take his hands off the steering wheel. Even the turn signal indicators are on the wheel itself as buttons. While I enjoy stickshift - If I owned an outright performance car i'd rather have a semi-auto transmission.

Test-drive them!

Well the Polo GTI and the Scirocco both seem to have the same 1.4 base engine. (With different Turbos and whatnot to make the difference in PS.)

But the 180 PS with 100 Kg less weight on the Polo GTI will give it an advantage. I've driven the DSG on friends Scirocco, and I liked it alot, it feels direct and smooth on automatic, but obviously never as direct as a manual. If you drive alot (to work f.e.) the DSG is certainly a plus.

Personally though, I do prefer to drive 2.0l engines.
