I gave the whole situation of human-machine interfaces a little thought lately, and truth be told, I am completely at a loss, I don't understand, why the industry is heading in a non-logical way. Let me tell you, what I am talking about.

The ideal interface between man and machine ever would be a matrix style, plug-it-in-your brains-type-thing. Why? Because the best interface would imply the following things: zero delay, highest accuracy, the machine understands exactly what the user wants with as little input and effort as possible. That's where we should be heading, and that's where we were heading with the keyboard, then mouse.

Input through keyboard at higher level already exceeds the speed of talking, that means humans can interface faster with machines than with some humans, and it costs almost as little effort as talking. That's something, that's very well coded, small delay, effective messages. Good interface.

Then came the mouse, which sped up the process even still, when it came to non textual interfacing. The interface evolved, the will of the human took less and less time and effort to affect the machine as intended.

Then came the thing I just don't understand. A completely different philosophy, one deemed: easier interfacing. I mean stuff like kinect. Sure, it's useful in a very limited way, like when it comes to dancing, it's lot easier to interface with the machine than if you would do with k&m, but for everything else, it's a waste.

It's delayed, takes loads of effort and it takes a long time to get a message across, ergo the coding of the message is not optimal. In all ways that matter, an inferior product.

Then we have touchscreen, which is a good substitute for a mouse on a mobile platform, but I can't understand why anyone would use it on their PC monitor, when the mouse is infinitely more effective. It's not only redundant, but also unfeasible.

So, my question is, why did we step off the logical path of making interaction faster and more reliable, and why did we go in a goofy direction. I mean, learning to handle a mouse is not really that hard.

BTW, the article posted not long ago here made me think, the one about what PC gaming will be in ten years time, so we're talking PC input devices here, not console crap.

There are technologies that I think should be researched more: eye movement pointer, thought control. Not fucking kinect shit.

What do you think?

kinect is just for games - nothing more, nothing less. imprecise and delayed, but works with the casual crowd.

eye movement pointer? it's imprecise as fuck too. if it was that great, we'd have quadriplegics dominating all the FPS leaderboards Laughing no seriously, it's more like moving a cursor that's about 1cm in size, plus it really puts a strain on your eyes.

and on the topic of thought control: the previous consumer-level stuff (OCZ NIA etc) was crappy as hell, but i tried the emotiv epoc recently, and apart from looking sexy, that thing actually works as advertised! of course it won't replace keyboard+mouse and the usual ADHD gamer kid won't be able to do jack shit with it since you need to focus your thoughts. only way to improve that one would be to 1. drill 2. MOAR electrodes into someone's brain Very Happy

Last northern summer XRDS the student magazine for the association of computing machinery, published an entire edition devoted to recent research in human input. Find it here

AFAIK silly M$ and sony attempts to emulate the wii didn't get a look in. Mostly they discussed how to make interaction effective on nest year's computing device, not last century's PC.

actually kinect has a shit-ton of potential uses for a huge variety of fields
unfortunately games are almost none of them
dancing or fitness is the only one game control type where it is any use for

but outside games.. think proper 3d computer vision for robots, instant automatic 3d room generation or character keying for film production
with a microphone array and a kinect camera you can record the voice of a single targeted person in a crowd
it's brilliant tech, but a damn dumb use as a game controller

i agree with the first post.. until we get proper neural interface, keyboard and mouse is the way to go.. simple and efficient.
something like an xbox controller is more comfortable and laid back but less accurate

i just think youre missing the point.. this new fad of motion controllers isnt about responsive gaming, its about entertainment... its about creating systems to appeal to people, thats all... and i dont see anything wrong with it to be honest, until they start insisting that this is ALL you can use.
