Seems like in the beginning I'm getting a lot of black screens where I can't see anything but the game is still going. Figured it was just part of the game but when im sitting on the couch getting "interviewed" it's all black. Then asks me what I think of when I see "this" and that's when I figured something was wrong....I CANT see anything.

[edit] Screen blacked while some dudes head popped off (can't believe they kept this retarded shit) and when going into VATS it's completely black as well.

[spoiler]

Seems GPU driver related but that's just a guess, in Oblivion HDR and some incorrect cell-data caused a similar issue where the command CAL (ClearAdaptiveLight) cleared it up, was fixed in the drivers eventually though.

If you use SLI or Crossfire disabling it if possible might also help, if you use Skidrows exe you might also rename the exe to Fallout3.exe and start it directly to switch the drivers to using the Fallout 3 profile as I do not know how the Vegas profile is.
(Unsure about NVIDIA, ATI has apparently had one for a while but it's probably nothing fancy or advanced.)

(Forcing AA, AF and AO might be a problem depending on method used, AF should be fine though.)

Just some guesses though and might not be very helpful, artifacts or crashes would indicate a stability issues but it doesn't seem to be anything like that.

Well it's not the settings. Im not forcing anything and I tried running the game on low. Now when I load my game I get nothing but black, the UI shows up fine but that's it. Not running SLI or Crossfire.

Would you think it might be a codec or something?

Codecs would be for the audio and shouldn't affect that, odd behavior though, I guess that since it works sometimes the refresh rate and resolution are set properly and nothing is interfering with the EXE while you are playing (AV programs and similar.) though if they were it would probably crash instead of bug out like that.

Any other OSD in the background (FRAPS for example, on screen display from programs like that.)

Could try to run it in windowed mode as a test as well but it shouldn't matter, shader error then but that also doesn't seem likely.

Tried it in windowed mode and everything worked perfectly Neutral Tried it on all settings and was all snazzy, switch back to full screen and it's black.

Apparently FO3 had a black screen issue as well that ended up being the FFDSHOW coded or whatever it's called so ima try that.

no bueno Sad In windowed mode the waking up scene, the guy helping you up and everything are all working, in full screen that all blacks out.

So far, windowed mode works, full screen does not. Any other ideas JB?

Sorry, was away for a while but I'll try to help, nice to see some progress though the only way where FFDShow could interfere would be the intro movie and that's a BIK, unless it hooks to the audio system or does some other stuff it shouldn't.

It's unfortunate (Not a bad thing as such though.) but there are numerous builds of FFDShow and codec packs in general, I use a customized version of K-Lite 6.4.4 but CCCP or other might work just fine.

You'll want to open a movie or anything if you can't access FFDShow controls directly and then open both FFDshow "blue" and "red" status bar icons for video and audio.

Go to the settings tab and find the blacklist/whitelist info, ideally since there's usually nothing to lose by it you'd set FFDShow to only ever run in Whitelisted applications, K-Lite's FFDShow database for it only allows it to be used in media application and programs though stuff can be added and removed manually.

Alternatively (Though the above should work better.) you can add FalloutNV.exe to the blacklist to make sure it does not load up with the game.

Assuming it is FFDshow related this should take care of it.
(And allows fullscreen mode at full screen size / resolution without lowering clock-speeds as sometimes happens in Windowed mode via powerplay and other GPU energy saving measures that both NVIDIA and ATI use, also known as 3D and 2D clock speeds.)

Have you tried to right click the game exe and set "disable desktop" composition under compatibility or what it was called?

This disables Aero while the program is running but it's more or less just a guess, I can't see or find anything else that could be interfering though I don't know what programs you have active and how they work with the game but it's probably fine.
(Unless it is some generic driver issue, unsure what display drivers you are using but they're probably OK as covered earlier.)

Such a strange problem and I wonder what it could be but it's hard to troubleshoot computer problems just due to the hardware and software variables in configuration, what is used and how it's set up and so on, I'll try to think of something but what could it be?
(Testing to have AA, AF and HDR disabled is probably something you've done already.)

well some progress, figured I'd see what happens if I ran it in a differenet res. and it works fine if I use anything lower than my native resolution (1920x1080)
