Word comes with a robust tool for inserting equations with mathematical symbols. It's under Insert -> Equation.

Otherwise, look into LaTeX tools. For example: http://miktex.org/
(It's not as complicated as it might look. Laughing)

MikTeX+ LEd (LaTeX editor) is the pro tool for making scientific papers. You can also write in Wolfram Mathematica...

And Word... no... just... no grinhurt

Laughing

It serves it's purpose when you only need one or two formulae quickly. Smile

Yeah word has a great support for equations and it's real easy to use.

Latex just fails. Its 2010 why would I want to write code to make a paper. Only time I used it when I was forced to by old professors in college that still live in the stone age. (Or people that thinks its "cool" and "high-tech" because they have to write code). Its like making a website and going ahead and writing actual HTML instead of using a designer.

Yeah... LaTeX sucks... yeah... and all the scientists in the world are just plain stupid grinhurt

Do you know what you can do with LaTeX? It's not just for formulas, you can make presentations, implement audio and video files, draw in it... LaTeX pwns word in every aspect...

Ok maybe word beats LaTeX in making sparkly box around the text Laughing

word doesn't beat latex in functionality. But latex is old and crappy. If you need real power you use indesign.

Only good thing about latex is that its free.

Lolwut, dude indesign and Latex have nothing in common (aside the fact that you can write in them)!
Latex is specially made for scientific community, indesign is just for general design based publishing.

In the previous post you just stated "It's not just for formulas, you can make presentations, implement audio and video files, draw in it". Is that something that really useful for scientific community?

That's the reason I called you out with InDesign, because it does exactly those things and it does them better.

Latex is popular because it has advanced typographic features, equations, its free, separates text and layout, and it has good referencing system. InDesign does all those things, and does them better, aside maybe referencing where you might need to look for a plugin, or write one.

Aside from the references, I see nothing specially meant for scientific community. And I do know a lot of scientists use it for their papers, but a lot use InDesign nowdays too, and that number is just going to grow with the coming years.

If there are some other values latex has that I'm not aware of, then please tell me. But right now, InDesign does everything latex does, but does it by using a visual designer, instead of writing code.

I wrote word like equations and I write in LaTeX, and you just can't compare those two. Following that logic you'd get crappy formulas in InDesign (since it uses the word based text). Come to think of it I haven't heard of writing formulas in InDesign and I use it also.

Presentations are a cool feature of LaTeX, but it's an extra special, and yeah drawing things can be useful for scientists (Feynman diagrams and such things for ex.).

The only thing that you have in InDesign, that you'd have to work harder in LaTeX to get, is ability to position your text any way you like. But that's it. And I don't think that scientific community is that obsessed with diagonally position text Rolling Eyes

I dont think we're gonna get anywhere with this discussion so lets agree to disagree? Wink

I just feel like latex is old and should be replaced by a more streamlined tool like InDesign. That's pretty much it.
