New Franchises will come.

You have to realize gaming is in a durp durp stand still. Their trying to please both crowds, gamers, and casuals. And it's not working out to well.

that being said, i dont have a PROBLEM with continuing a franchise, because it gives me something to invest in (the character, world, etc).. its only when those sequels are crap, that i have an issue with em... but the concept of franchises? im fine with it.

reboots, on the other hand *cough* medal of honor *cough*....

I still remember MoH on PS1... Physics on the soldiers' helmets seemed so revolutionary back then! Laughing

I thought it looked amazing when a German soldier was crawling inside the ventilation system. Had never seen that before.

MoH psx was one of the first fps I played on console and really enjoyed.

PC MOH was something else with the Omaha Beach level. I fired it up a couple of years ago for nostalgia's sake but it wasn't the same. It hadn't aged well at all, and it looked quite bad frankly compared to todays standards. MoH MP used to be good in those days too.

Lara Croft springs to mind. They have tried to reinvent her so many times through the countless sequels. Sorry, but she now ranks alongside Mario and Sonic the hedgehog as an iconic gaming figure not as a sexy game avatar that will sell games. Like a gaming milf if theres such a thing.

Have you played the last 4 games (including Guardian of he Light) ? The series got much better after that awful Angel of Darkness.

It's not the ideas that are in short supply, it's the investments. If you give an investor/publisher a choice between a fresh IP (a risk, basically) and a sequel to a commercially successful game that'd both cost an equal amount to make, which one you think he'll inevitably pick?

Actually Angel of Darkness was the only bad game in the franchise. All the others were at least good in my opinion, though I didn't played the one that just came out just a little. It doens't seem bad, a pretty nice platformer and basically it's not from the same franchise, it just uses the same universe.

Yes it wasn't like this in the good old days of the nineties, where I was busy playing Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Serpent Isle or Might and Magic V, part 1+2(World of Xeen), VI, VII and VIII, Lands of Lore through III or X-Com: UFO Defence (UFO: Enemy Unknown), X-Com: Terror From the Deep, X-Com Apocalypse and X-Com: Interceptor. Or the Command & Conquer series. Wizardry 5 through 8 at 2001.
Back then we had originality and creativity in gaming.

Releasing sequels in a fast pace was very common in the oldern days. Hell, most sequels were just improved version of the original (just like now). No one was complaining ab out that while now a sequel two years after the original is considered "too damn fast" by some people.
There's also the fact that many things have been done, the bussiness is being saturated. Innovating now is very difficult. Many devs even go "back to the roots", reviving old formulae. Add to this the fear for deviating from working mechanics due to high budgets and you'll have your answer.

Very Happy

The "little" difference was that sequels actually implement new features with great impact on gameplay (dont know much about RPGs/ adventure since that was never my brand)

ex: DuneII invented the all Command&Conquer alike genre and Dune I was mainly a RPG... "Paul your eyes are so blue..." (after that line i could never play another RPG!)

AAA titles are expensive, cant blame a company to invest something that worked in the past.
In the past one person could make a state of the art game, now it is >100.
