|
 |
Quote: | This "holiday season," one Blu-ray will be released that houses both the original God of War and God of War II. Obviously, the Blu-ray disc means that it's not a PS2 game and thus there's no need to worry about backwards compatibility. These PS2 games will be remastered and pack 60 frames-per-second action, 720p graphics, and PlayStation Network Trophy support.

It's nice bet let's be realistic here. If all they do is up the res to 720p and add achievements it's meh.
PS2 versions of GoW1 and 2 already support 60fps, progressive scan, widescreen, and GoW2 even has HD mode with a cheat.
I'm a huge GoW fan and I don't know if these trivial additions are good enough to make me buy games I already played more than once. I hope they make more improvements.

I see where you are coming from, especially as someone who owns a functioning PS2 and the games in question, but I think there's a lot of people who will look on this more favourably. Maybe it's not amazing (like an ICO/SOTC remastered disc would be ) but with God of War III on the horizon it will be a way of hooking unfamiliar people into the franchise and to help create extra buzz for the new title. For those of us that don't have a PS2 (and don't want to buy one!) and own a PS3 sans backwards compatibility this is going to be more exciting obviously.

Yeah this is definitely great for new people. I can't even imagine playing GoW3 without having played the first 2 games, as GoW3 continues instantly after GoW2. It's like they ran out of DVD space and said "oh shit, hold on, we'll continue it in GoW3".

Well if you already played them and are not interested anymore then it's probably just not for you.
I never played GoW 1 & 2 and my PS3 has no backwards capability and I always wanted to play those games, so I'll definitely get this.
I assume this is meant for people like me who never got those games for the PS2 or don't even own a PS2 and want to get ready for GoW3 after seeing some demos of it.
So for 40$ this is a steal...
If they wanted to get people who alrady played those games to buy this they'd add new content and stuff like that.
Anyway, great news!

Oh god, two mindfucks in one thread. It better work with all PS3's and they better do ICO/SOTC for the Last Guardian release. [/Nerrrrd raaage].

Holy crap. 40$ to play two old games again. Not that cheap actually. Only worth it if you never played them on PS2

manufacturing costs apparently.
the very first PS3s that cost 600$ or something had the emotion engine chip of the PS3 for hardware emulation as well as the PS2 graphics chip. They dropped the emotion engine to reduce cost but kept the graphics chip which led to some PS2 games not working anymore.
They then dropped that graphics chip in certain cheaper versions of the PS3 as well eliminiating backwards compatbility altogether.
What sucks is that they never released the more effordable partial-backwards compatible ps3 in europe while it was still available in the US and japan.
They supposedly registered a patent a while ago about PS2 emulation on PS3 consoles, so I'm fully expecting all PS3 models to gain backwards compatbility through a firmware update at some point.

Sony released a press statement (Cant find the link right now, forget where i read it) that BC for newer consoles will not happen, and they are not working on it.
And now you see why, they can now rehash old games and sell them a new.
Glad my PS3 is BC.

OMG! thats wonderful news. The ps3 is my first Sony console so I never got a chance to play any of these. Will be nice to play through 1 and 2 to get a better perspective on 3. I missed that with MGS4, even though they tried to explain a lot through the extras dvds

I'm surprised any of you are getting excited over this, anyone who really wanted to play them could have got a PS2 and the two games for £40 or less. There are a few other PS2 games that are worth playing too.

I would rather just get remastered versions than buy a whole console and add to the clutter of my entertainment center.

So, why is Sony not capable of getting a straight PS2 port, running completely natively on PS3, running at 1080p? Seriously?

10 times more than a few But I agree with your post, unless you are a complete GFX ho getting a PS2 is very worth it. (I'm not even sure if GFX ho remark is appropriate here, as many PS2 games still look awesome).

graphics aren't particularly important for me. I play dwarf fortress for example.
But PS2 on my HDTV looks horrible.
If I still had my good old tv I probably wouldn't mind, but on an HDTV, low res stuff is just wrong.
I would have probably played it on my ps2 eventually, but this port is gonna be better than the old ps2 version so I'm happy and don't mind waiting a bit longer.

Yeah, you really need a CRT TV to get the best quality of PS2.

Really? Do you use composite, or component cables? Progressive-scan SD stuff looks GREAT on my HDTV.

Thats a bit of an oxymorron or what you call it. You use a crt to hide the flaws of the ps2.
Looking forward to this collection, never got to play 1 and 2 and got interested in these type of games after playing the excellent Wolverine game which I'm hoping is a God of War clone.

Uh, what? I mentioned CRT because people nowadays hook up PS2 to a LCD and wonder why it looks horrible. If you didn't know LCDs only look good in native res and CRT looks good in any res.
And don't use words that you don't even know how to type or what they mean.

Oxymoron= "a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness” or “to make haste slowly.”
So you writing that crt makes the quality better is morronic because it only hides the flaws of the low res ps2.
