Far Cry 3 returns the series to a tropical setting, similar to the first game. Players will assume the role of a protagonist known as Jason Brody, a tourist who has been stranded on an island chain that has been in the grips of violent local conflict for many years. Jason has been separated from his girlfriend and, in his search for her, developers have stated he will have to deal with a wide cast of mostly unstable characters who have been trapped on these islands for some time. In the short demo trailer that, as of June 2011, is the only gameplay footage released so far, Jason interacts with one such character, named Vaas (voiced by Michael Mando), who gives an unsettling monologue about the nature of insanity before trying to drown Jason by anchoring him to a cinder block and throwing him into a natural pool of water that has clearly been used repeatedly for this purpose. Details of Jason's backstory have yet to be provided, aside from the fact that developers have stated that he possesses a strong skillset as a combatant and survivalist that give him a fighting chance in the desperate circumstances he constantly finds himself in during the events of the game. Developers have also stated that the intended tone of the game will be one of realism and intensity and an attempt to invoke a visceral and constant feeling of danger in the player

The latest issue of PC Gamer reports that development on Far Cry 3 is well underway.
According to the mag's Spy column, work on the game is "in full swing now", although it packs little else on the game itself, it does say development is being handled by Ubisoft's Montreal studio, lead by former Relic Entertainment lead designer Josh Mosqueira, who did Company of Heroes.
This isn't the first time the game's been mentioned; Ubisoft scriptwriter Kevin Shortt told the Official PlayStation magazine way back in 2009 that Far Cry 3 "looks pretty exciting", seemingly confirming its existence.
And in 2008 narrative designer Patrick Redding mentioned that a sequel would likely retain an African setting, though he also mentioned Antarctica as a possibility.
Far Cry 2 had the best open ended gunfights ever, but it was repetitive and got boring. But it was super fluid, best fights I've ever seen in any shooter. Rambo style non-scripted stuff.
But you need to know how to play imaginatively, not like you'd play Half Life 2. I've done some epic shit in that game and it WORKS from a gameplay standpoint.
But missions were BORING in themselves, story, too. Damn ...

Don't forget the countless guard camps scattered across the map that re-spawned enemies as soon as you got over the next hill - making getting anywhere a major pain in the ass

The spawning wa brutal. Also, the AI cheated near the end of the game, ruining the atmosphere and the stealth aspect of the gameplay. Yes, it had stealth and I was pretty good at it.
Night + camo suit + crouching + dart gun (silent long range one hit kills) = half the camp dead before detection
Then exploding barrels, machine guns and tons of grenades wreaking havoc, bodies all over the place, cars get blown up, all tangos go down, some are screaming for the last time while dying.
Then driving off full speed on a buggy through the burning savannah amidst explosions. Take that mofos !
A few poor decisions ruined what could have been a great game in Far Cry 2. The guards, the guns breaking after 10 shots, the constant need to repair your vehicle. Without these things the game would have been miles better.

Well optimized I give them that, however shitty game overall, there's not a single original mission, all the same crap, deliver this, go kill that, drive over 9000 miles through respawning enemies, shit was more tiring than fun.

Agreed man, it was fun at start. But after doing it for 10 times it got boring >.<

I hope they will keep the Africa setting,as they said in 2008.
I absolutely loved (and still do) FarCry 2; the landscape, the shooting mechanics, the AI, the engine were great.
I got my copy bundled with a GTX 260 video card, torrented the Fortunes DLC (which added a few cool weapons : a Rambo style crossbow with explosive-tipped arrows, a double barreled sawn-off shotty, and a silenced shotty like in No Country for Old Men - also added two new vehicles, a truck and an ATV), and finished the game three times until now.
Didn't mind the fast respawn rate; actually i enjoyed it, cause it gave more stuff to shoot at.

Far Cry 2 was the most disappointing game ever, looked great on paper but when you finally got the game you realize they forgot to put some missions in it
I can't believe that I bothered to complete Far Cry 2. But I guess there was something addictive about it.
But this game had so much potential and could have been great, if Ubi had just made a few alterations such as:
1. Changing the respawning rate to maybe once every 24 hours or maybe 12 hours (ingame time of course).
2. Made the factions be present in the game outside of the cities, so that you would be able to travel in friendly territory now and then (Imagine being close to friendly territory while being chased and then running/driving to the friendly camp and take advantage of the backup...I think that would add to the fun
3. Changed the look of nighttime, it's awful to see a nice looking game turned to shit just because the sun sets
4. Fixed the Stealth mechanics as it is pretty unreliable...I mean, even a budget game developer like City Interactive managed to fix their stealth mechanics for Sniper: Ghost Warrior within a month or two.
Ubisoft can make me happy by making FC3 like FC2 as long as they include my suggestions, but if FC3 takes place in Antarctica I guess we will only have Penguins to deal with...
I managed 2 hours of Far Cry 2, then it was promptly uninstalled and image deleted. What a crappy game. Great game engine with absolutely no interesting game play or story and with absolutely NO connection with Far Cry (no mutants, science experiments etc..). Worthless piece of shite in a pretty engine. :/

same here, only i removed it after 20 minutes.....the game sucked hard compaired to far cry 1
PC version will be delayed for an indefinite period of time whereas console versions will have already gotten out a few months back. That's the one 100%-guaranteed thing about this game for now.

+1
I fucking hated it as well... Tried to play, but i hate fucking sandbox games like this one. Couldn't bare Red Faction 2 for too long as well. It was just too painful.
RF 1 and FC 1 were much better and DIFFERENT as hell. They just kept the name and made something totally different (and shitty IMO).
might be a long stretch....but I bet the reason they are focusing on Antarctica is so they don't have to worry about updating their engine in regards to how fire was dealt with.....
That is (imo) the only good thing FC2 had going for it.....sit back and throw a cocktail and watch shit burn properly.
Far Cry 2 would be nice with teleport trainer and without those crappy weapons jamming every 2 clips.
Yeah it was, I used a trainer to save location to a town so I just had to deal with the stupid guards one-way. Removed the gun degradation as well - was a pretty good game that way (excluding the stupid ending in the gauntlet, just running through a jungle corridor).
That pear-idiot icon fits in rather well on those annoying guards just standing around the checkpoints, if I could I'd photo in that jeep vehicle as well since now and then it just appears out of nowhere with some guys in it and rams you, could have been handled better.
(I tried to modify it a bit but was a pretty shitty modification of that picture so I trashed it.)
EDIT: http://img839.imageshack.us/img839/3206/derb.png
(I shouldn't have tried to tan it via hue alterations and strong contrast it and the gun placement is horrible plus it doesn't have any alpha map stuff, more accessories as well maybe.)
(EDIT: More like a fried peanut than a pear now.)
