So, I don't think I really need a new one, since my current one does pretty much what I need, but I'm a geek and I want something to play with Razz

Old list scrapped (see discussion below), latest revision:

Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
Gigabyte Radeon HD5770 1GB
Intel Core i5 650, 3.20GHz
Corsair 8GB (4x2048MB) 1600MHz XMS3
Fractal Design Tesla 650W 80+
Corsair Cooling Hydro H50 CPU-kylare
A-Data 32GB SSD 391-Series
Fractal Design Define R2

My plan is to OC the i3 to maybe 4ghz, and have great temps at the same time with the H50. Thoughts? Smile

Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

I'd ditch the H5O and upgrade that slow GPU.
Also 4gb ddr dual channel for that system not 6gb tri channel.
32gb is tight as hell for OS and app installs.
For all the gain you can get from such a small drive your as well booting from a cheaper standard HDD.

Is the system intended to play games?

Hiper Type-M 550W PSU
Gainward 512mb 8800GT

Then your upgrade is a complete waste of cash for such a small performance change.

Hm, why ditch the H50? Ive read a little about it, people seem to like it alot.

And my current W7 install takes up 14 gb, so 32 should be more than enough. I dont have that many apps, the only ones worth mentioning are Photoshop, Dreamweaver adn Illustrator.

Maybe go 8gb instead of 4? Very Happy Then I never have to worry about RAM, more or less Smile

I said ditch the H5O simply to put cash into upgradeing the graphics.
The H5O is not a bad cooler.
The fenrir is better though at half the price.

After seeing your system spec as it is now though, i really don't feel the gains from your planned upgrade are worth spending cash on.
It's more of a step sideways than it is a step up.
Save cash untill you have enough to buy something that's significantly faster than what you already have.

I am not sure about the SSD you are looking at. what controler does it use?
Does it support trim

Intel have some 40gb drives you should look at.

Then what should I go for instead if I really want to do a step up? My E6750 is at stock speed. The 5750 is my by looking at benchmarks a whole lot faster than my 8800GT.

An i3 at 4ghz stable, 8 gigs of DDR3 PC12800, SSD and an 5750 - this isn't significantly faster than my old setup? I'm surprised, to say the least!

It's faster just not enough faster to justify all the cash you would be spending.

The bennefit of 8gb ram over 4gb is next to nothing under normal circumstances and not worth it in your case it seems.

If i was you, i would be looking at a good quad chip and a HD5770 minimum for a step up.

You could maybe add a SSD and OC your E6750 to 3.6ghz~ and upgrade your graphics for now?
You should be able to re-use your PSU and HDD to save cash.

My W7 eats up disk as a crazy whore I dunno why Sad I have only <2 GB free from 40GB :\

You should go with 5770 if you want the best mid range card (the price difference is minimal between 5750 and 5770, and 5830 costs too much for what you get) and I can't see the usage of three sticks of ram when you don't have the option of running them in triple channel mode (only i7 has that ability iirc).

Oh and I assume you have external HD or sth alike for storage and stuff...

Well, speaking of money, this setup will cost me $1200/£790 by todays currrency conversion from Swedish Krona.

Then, I'll sell my current setup to a friend for $540/£355

So $1200/790-$540/£355 = $660/£435 is what it'll effectively cost me.

Edit: Dingo, yeah, I have some HDDs that ill be keeping from my old setup Smile

Where will you be buying components?

Had a quick google for the SSD you chose.. seems like a bad choice.
Bad performance and critically no trim support.

Go for 4GB RAM or ditch the SSD and buy an i5. The i5 is a brilliant CPU for its price.

Here's what I did Smile

Ditched the modular PSU, and added practically the same PSU, not just modular. I dont need a modular one. Switched the i3 to an i5. And now im pretty much at the same cash-level anyway.

Latest revision of the shopping list:
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
Gigabyte Radeon HD5770 1GB
Intel Core i5 650, 3.20GHz
Corsair 8GB (4x2048MB) 1600MHz XMS3
Fractal Design Tesla 650W 80+
Corsair Cooling Hydro H50 CPU-kylare
A-Data 32GB SSD 391-Series
Fractal Design Define R2

$1300/£860

Better? Smile

EDIT: Damn! Forgot to tell you all that im getting a new case aswell - its been in my price calculation all the time, ive just forgotten to mention it. Updated the list above with it.

The Sparkle GeForce GTX 460 768MB is a reasonably priced alternative, is it better than the 5770?

Change cpu for the i5 750. 650 is dual core, the 750 is a quad.
The GTX 460 is a much better choice than the HD5770 yes.
Ditch 4gb of ram (8gb wont make anything faster than the 4gb)
And buy a better ssd with the cash saved.
Intel 40gb drive Wink
TRIM is essential now when buying a SSD.

Now it's starting to look like a sweet system..
Those GTX 460 cards when put in SLI have a amazing scaleing (perform alot better than a single GTX480) so that's a great future upgrade for you when you feel you need it.

Why 8gb of ram? it wont be any faster than 4gb and will cost twice as much Sad
That cash could be used for something that actually counts.

No one asked the most important question. What will you use it for? Depending on usage 8GB and SSD might be usueful. I personally would go for 4GB and ditch teh SSD drive. SSD HDD is still in its infancy, not a good time to get one.

Alright, the SSD was there mostly because it felt "nice to have", but yeah, screw it.

Also, 8gb is out and replaced with 4gb. And the H50 is back, so I can run 4ghz on that i5 750 Smile

The mobo is also replaced, since im going Nvidia, I want SLi and not Crossfire Wink But how is ASRock these days? I've built one PC, for my sister that used a ASRock board, when cash was low, and that was years ago, and it still works perfectly. But they are cheaper for a reason I guess... ?

Latest list:
Intel Core i5 750, 2.66GHz
Asrock P55 Deluxe3
Corsair 4GB (2x2048MB) 1600MHz DOMINATOR DHX
Sparkle GeForce GTX 460 768MB

Fractal Design Define R2
