I bet it's mostly due to the new headphones.

Didn't even need to do it that expensive, a simple Creative X-Fi or ASUS Xonar would've done, but yes it's an overlooked component. I'm honestly not going back to onboard audio unless those improve a shitload

I tested an Asus Xonar D2X recently, it made most the 3d games I tested perform like a slideshow, went back to my Auzen X-Meridian after that.

Forte has headphone amplifier, that makes huge difference in sound quality.

Why do headphones need a specific amplifier?
With high quality headphones you can often hear static background noises that cheap headphones hide but that should be the biggest difference. Plugging my Shure SE530 into my laptop directly destroys music with background noise but my fairly cheap Edirol UA-1EX USB soundcard makes them sound like a dream.
The only thing you need is a clean output, soundcards that are advertised to sound "better than reality" are likely just ruining the sound with an EQ (the audio equivalent to BluRays that are crippled by DNR).

Lets not forget that headphone amplifier does much more than remove static background noises. Headphone amplifier is really making difference on GOOD quality heaphones because they can output correct Ohm to the fucking headphones, bass etc.. will sound much more weaker on intergrated shit.
