This was kind of my problem..although it is rare, if you buy a SLIM online you may get the motherboard that requires you to buy an extra battery and make it into a pandora battery and an extra MMS.

Personally just to avoid extra costs, i'd suggest finding a PSP Original (v1000 (model# found behind battery)) in a store or a used PSP 2000 (Slim) at a normal store where you can pop open the battery and look at the serial stuff.. at the very bottom line it will say:

PSP200X-PB
220-240V
SS259 NP

So long as the "NP" is either NP, NPA, A, B, C, D, E, F it can be hacked. If the letter is G i think it requires you to have a shitty Pandora plugged in all the time.

Some excellent information for soft modding and what you will need:

http://www.pspmod.com/forums/psp-beginners-forum/60740-how-tell-if-your-slim-2001-hackable.html

http://www.pspmod.com/forums/software-firmware-plugins/60721-guide-chickhen-cfw-1ks-hackable-2ks.html

Once you mod, and if you download any new game that has new-new firmware, you may need to patch it, here's a good guide for that:

That post that says all red and silver ones are hackable is like a year old, is that still the case?

I can't be sure, I think those are special editions with the God of War or Star wars logos on them yes... The normal PSPS have a sort of white version out I think..but its' not the same silver.

Yes, 1000 is the FAT model, it will be 1001 if in the US...1002 if i in like japan i think..so just 100x depending on where you are. Yes all of the 1000's are moddable using the second link I gave you up there.
Here's the rundown on differences that I stole from another site Razz

-Fat has more speakers (4, not two, noticeably louder on fat, speakers on bottom of psp and lower part of front, not upper part of front)
-Fat weighs more, much bigger, very easy to tell
-Slim has video output to tv
-Slim is missing IR (infrared) port
-Slim WLAN switch is on top, not side
-Slim has less complicated disk slot (no metal bars, just empty)
-Slim has slide out memory stick slot, not door style
-Elevated buttons on slim
-More RAM (random access memory) on slim allowing for faster loading times and option to cache umds resulting in more battery life
-Supposedly more efficient battery usage
-Charging through usb mode
