Just write the plain text in Word or Wordpad then use a DTP program (PageMaker for example) for the layout.

I agree... word is very good and flexible with text, but when it comes to images it's completely broken.... from the layout to the handling of captions, to the text wrapping options it's a total fuckup. And I especially HATE how it forces you to place an image in exactly one spot instead of beiing able to tell it "place it at the beginning of the page and keep it there, no matter how I reformat the rest of the document".

Sometimes a whole piece of text, an alinea for example, seems to get stuck to a pic. I can't figure that one out. When you move a pic, it drags a whole piece of text with it.

When I was writing my final project documents for my degree, I had similar problems of images fucking up the entire document's layout and making some heading bold putting an entire blank page before the text. I just removed all images, wrote the text by itself with no formatting, with the images in a folder to the side, and when I was satisfied the text was done and no more edits were needed, I only then added the images and did final text design (like headlines, lists, etc.). This went a lot faster than having to fix all problems coming out of small text edits.

Omg writing thesis in word :\ I can't even imagine how fucked up that must be :\
Use LaTeX You just type, and add pictures and the program does the rest. You can fiddle around with pictures (wrapped around text and such), and do wonders with it ^^
All scientific papers are usually written in LaTeX...

Oh God, Latex. That bitch made my head hurt. Typing without WYSIWYG to create a boring standardized design. Which happens to be perfect for scientific purposes, I know.
I would prefer to type the text in Notepad and create the layout with InDesign.

Depends on what editor you are using. I like LEd because on the side I have DVI viewer, and every time I compile the text I see how it looks
