So I softmodded my wii a couple of months ago and it works pretty damn good. However, today I saw a lan adapter in the shop which Im concidering buying for it.

My question is : Is it safe to connect it to the internet even though its softmodded?

yes, you can go online and play online - theres no method of detection.

however, why get an expensive lan adapter... just connect via Wifi?

eBay?

It would be cheaper just to get a wireless router and connect that to your network. Put WPA2 encryption on the password, and you'll be fine...

I think you want to make sure the always on feature( is it called connect24 or some shit like that) is off becasue in one firmware revision they added the EULA that they could auto update you without you having to say yes. But i could be wrong as i soft modded mine some time ago, and just fix it here and there for new games.

This.

You're not wrong, bud. I've made sure to keep my Connect24 disabled just in case Nintendo act on their new policy. System updates whilst flashed won't damage the machine, you'll just lose all your softmod stuff and have to do it again... not impossible, just annoyingly time-consuming.
