|
 |
I installed win7 on a netbook for a friend and then set it up properly, fully updated and activated with all programs she needs etc.
Then I instaalled True Image and made an image of the whole disk to an external disk. Original disk was 8gb, the image was about 3,5gb.
So, when she screwes everything up, I can just restore it *exactly* as it was at the time of the image ? I did not enable the sector-by-sector option.

Aye, from what I remember; you just run that backup image and it will restore the HDD back to the very moment you made the image. Acronis can even create a bootable DVD, which you can stick the backup image on, and allow you to restore the HDD that way too.

w7 also has integrated backup imaging of the system drive
so you can just use that to make an image
or if you have a secondary drive attached you can just schedule it to backup to it every week or month
and then restore it with the bootup system recovery or a recovery disc
but third party software should work aswell
but you might have to fix the boot sector manually if the partition table has been fiddled with in between
and if something is not 1:1 identical it might make windows activation scratch it's head
if acronis can do stuff like sabin says, then it's probably quite safe without any extra fiddling
