The guest has to be x32 OS, according to the documentation. Better go with XP.
Why do you want 3d acceleration ? I mean, for what program ?

VMware supports D3D (last I checked it was DX8) in one of their clients I think.

I don't recommend VMWare for casual use, too heavy, installs services etc.
moose, you can get any untouched OEM version and use your key,a s long as it's the same version as the key is for. (Home, Pro, etc)
Or just use an activation crack. You can update fully through windows update afterwards.

Casual users are more than enough with VMWare Player, which is also free. As for services, they all install them for the network emulation.

The player isn't heavy anymore. The regular Workstation version is much heavy, but there is little point installing that for casual users.

Yeah, virtualization can be useful in many many ways.
Btw are you using Vmware or Virtualbox ?
P.S.: Install Tinker and check out the D3D capability.
