Hi there,
so I'm using Debian atm. I'm trying to configure the whole thing in a way so that I can install certain packages from the testing release onto my stable one.
Namely firefox/iceweasel.
Edited the sources.list and added the entries for testing.
Created a preferences file gave the stable release the pin priority 990 and the testing 90.
Put when I tell apt-get to install iceweasel from testing it wants t install over 200 packages and update about 170.
And when I look over the packages it wants to install it really looks as if apt-get wants to update my gnome gui completely (which I did once already by accident and it just killed my system completely. Couldn't manage to get gnome running again).
So I suppose I'm doing either something wrong in the sources.list or the preferences file.
Any people with good linux knowledge here that could help me?

edit:
and if somebody could tell me how I can manage to install firefox on debian. And by firefox I mean firefox and not iceweasel (yes, I do know they are the same I just don't like iceweasel Very Happy )

edit2:
I figured that the gnome update it wants seems necessary. (I thought I fucked something up so that it just wants to update everything). But if I install something "small" from testing, like newer gcc version it only installs a handful of packages.
But if I let him install the 200 packages it screws with my gui which I can't get to run at all again :/

edit3:
just for the fun of it, I tried upgrading gnome with its testing version but that's not workng either. Says something about not fullfilled depencies.
So the gnome pacakge is dependent on a bunch of other packages. Shouldn't apt-get solve the depency issues on it's own? As in install the packages it depends on as well?
But when trying to upgrade gnome it says it depends on those other pacages but they "aren't supposed to b installed" wtf? O.o

You sound like you're just getting settled in the Linux world, I'd recommend you start with something like Linux Mint, which is Debian based and so is compatible with their huge backlog of software.
But compared to most other distributions, it has everything you need for daily computing, codecs, proprietary drivers et al, right from the start.
If you 'really' want to learn how the system is built then "start" with something like Arch Linux, and if you're feeling lucky - which I doubt, then Gentoo.

You can't get firefox on debian, they won't have anything that is proprietary branded in their repos.

Epsilon, why no Ubuntu recommendation ? Basically Debian with proprietary stuff where it's really needed.

Aha... more stuff is great for desktop environment Very Happy

Personally, was sticking to Debian and eventually moved completely to Ubuntu Server. But my needs are mostly server based, no GUI layers.

With internet connection speed quite regular increase, improvement in packages management facilities, virtualization technologies - VMWare in headless mode uses just 1% CPU, I found that it's much more faster to install ubuntu server, php, apache, mysql, etc. in virtual machine than to compile from source on a main OS. Plus it gives me a nice separation, I could do anything I want with main OS or I could just move VM to other machine. For scripting needs, bundled with main OS languages are usually sufficient.

Well, with hardware virtualization, there really are little reasons for server admins not to go that route these days. Smile
I am not sure about the Linux world, but on the Server 2008 side with Hyper-V, it is a very solid technology, and is integrated inside Windows quite firmly. Smile

So this basically turns into every Linux related board I ever saw?
"If you don't know how it's done you should probably not be doing it."
Just ignore the firefox/iceweasel part. I just wanna find out why it fucks my system up if I try to install certain testing packages (ie. eclipse, iceweasel). Well it fucks it up because it wants to update gnome to it's testing version (which I would be fine with) but that can't be done as well and for the love of whatever is holy I can't figure out how it's done.
And as for taking another distribution. I don't want a system that takes me by the hand. For my own learning experience I need a system that just says "here you got the bare basics, rest is up to you."

@epsilon:
I know my basic way around Linux and most stuff I don't know I get from google or a friend of mine who's quite good at that stuff. Problem is he just moved so he got no phone / internet so I can't ask him. If I could, I already would have Very Happy

So much for saying "fuck it" and switching to Ubuntu. Doesn't. Fucking. Work.
Why? Because for some godforsaken reason Ubuntu isn't able to (or let's me for that matter) install and configure my graphics drivers correctly.
I can however use it when I hook up an external display. Great. Fucking great.
And as always the internet (several ubuntu boards etc.) are helpful as fuck.

May I suggest the Open SUSE and its excellent software center (inc. driver packages)? Smile
