|
 |
Hi guys
after over a year of this problem i thought i would finally post it for you guys to muse over as its driving me up the fucking wall.
This has happened on 2 different OS's and 2 different keyboards, the first OS was xp and now its win 7 ultimate.
It only seems to happen in game, I'll be happily playing a game and i suddenly hear a small beep, like a system beep in the speakers. Sometimes it will stop certain keys working on the keyboard, sometimes not. When I return to windows CAPS lock is on despite the light being turned off, if I activate caps lock it writes in lower case, not only that but if I click on links it'll open a new window instead of it opening in the same browser window. Also clicking anywhere on a web page or on the desktop will highligh everything up to the point i clicked.
before the obvious answers I dont have sticky keys, toggle keys or any of the other keyboard options turned on. which makes it all the more mysterious. It seems to dissapear with a reboot.
does anyone have any ideas?, this has been bothering me for the last year or so, and like I said no keyboard options on, tried 2 different operating systems and keyboards. If it helps I use the arrow keys for movement and the surrounding keys; shift, @, ctrl etc etc.

standard keyboards can have only a limited number of keys pressed at once
i think it's 4 or possibly 5 for most keyboards
when you reach the limit, windows gives a beep

I had the same problem with my old system on Unreal Tournament, but i had a crappy wireless keyboard. As soon as i switched to wired all the troubles went away.
Is the keyboard old? and in what game are we speaking of?

it happens in 90% of games, gta, l4d2, cod4
its not pressing too many keys, because it fucks up things, i know if you press to many keys to get a bepp but all the other things wouldnt happen.
you can pretty much replicate all the wierd symptoms (highlighting pages, opening new windows) if you hold down shift and click the mouse, Ive opened up both keyboards, nothing is stuck or dirty, seems shift is getting stuck it seems, but why?

One of the windows' accessibility option is called Sticky Keys
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/accessibility/stickykeys.mspx
(it's in W7x64 too)
Quote: | To use the shortcut that allows you to turn StickyKeys on or off by pressing the SHIFT key five times, |
Usually, when Sticky Keys are engaged, there is small beep.
You can disable it in Accessibility options in Control Panel.

Can you try another keyboard ?
Also, are you sure you don't have a keylogger in your system, lol ?

My bad, sorry.
The description fits to Sticky keys nicely, and it seems that you are not the only one with sticky keys disabled but still working - one of google results http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vistainstall/thread/a7c9fc02-2d0f-4db6-89fb-e36eca3e2ac7
Can you narrow it down to keys which, pressed couple of times during gameplay, cause such effect?

My guess is trying a high end keyboard and test if that gives the same results.
