Quote:
Ubisoft is to replace its paper instruction manuals with digital ones in an attempt to save trees and stem its greenhouse gases output.

The move will also allow the publisher to provide a more robust manual to gamers, said Ubisoft, as well as more intuitive access to game information.

In addition to its paper-saving initiative, Ubisoft has also partnered with Technimark to switch to the industry's most environmentally-responsible DVD case for all of its future PC titles in North America.

"Ubisoft is often recognised for making great games, but it's a special privilege to be the industry leader at saving trees," said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America.

"Eco-friendly initiatives are important to the global community and introducing in-game digital manuals on Xbox 360 and PS3 is just the latest example of Ubisoft's ongoing commitment to being a more environmentally conscious company."

According to Ubisoft data, producing one ton of paper for game manuals consumes an average of two tons of wood from 13 trees, with a net energy of 28 million BTUs - the equivalent to one home's average heating and energy for a year - over 6000lbs of CO2 and 15,000 gallons of waste water.

The digital manuals will be introduced to all Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games, starting with Shaun White Skateboarding, due out later this year.
PC games have already made the switch with the release of Splinter Cell: Conviction.

"It's pretty cool that Ubisoft is making a conscious effort to go green with its new video game packaging," commented Olympic Gold medalist Shaun White. "I'm excited for my new skateboarding game to come out and stoked that it will be the very first Ubisoft game to be part of their green packaging initiatives.".

OP Comment:

A vox pop survey amongst industry insiders found most in favour but I feel nostalgic of a time when game publishers produced beautiful in-depth manuals.
However, I have to be honest that I usually now just do a on line search if I need specific information.[/quote]

Lolwat, "often recognised for making great games"? They've made like 2 good games the past couple of years.

Also, why do we PC people care, if it's only for 360 and PS3? Or did they just not bother writing PC, as noone buys their PC games?

lets suggest them to not use DRM,
this way all will download scene releases very quickly after the release date,
and use pdf manuals

Will games be cheaper?

Besides that, nothing worthwhile is lost. Manuals this days are useless.

That's the important question isn't it?
We'll see but I am pessimistic...

Whaa.. I could swear that bit wasn't in there at the time of my post. Oh well.

Ubisoft is a bunch of douchebags tbh, never buying a game from them again.

It wasn't, you were right Smile
I added a bit more from a public article to prevent confusion and confirm the pc is subject to the same policy.
The article I posted is from a industry news wire.

aren't you selling them a little short?

Anno 1404
Assassin's Creed 1&2
Beyond Good and Evil
Brothers in Arms series
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Far Cry 1&2
Heroes of Might and Magic V
IL-2 Sturmovik
No More Heroes 1&2
Prince of Persia series
Silent Hunter 3
Ghost Recon series
Rainbow Six series
Splinter Cell series
Morrowind
World in Conflict

you may not agree with all of these, but that's some good stuff that bears their name.

and about the manuals? who cares... didn't read manuals in years.
it's nice when you like..go out and buy a game in a store and then on your way home you have nothing to do so you take a peek or something but I don't think I'd miss anything.

You do realize that only 2 or 3 of those games are actually made by Ubisoft, right?

well, as publisher they're responsible for the game's quality as well.

or would you say that only when a game sucks you blame the publisher, but when a game is good the publisher has nothing to do with it?

No, I wouldn't say that. If a game's bad, it's the developer's fault. If a game's good, then good for the developers.

Most publishers today aren't involved in the actual game at all. Just look at DNF.

Yes true.
But still, "often recognised for making great games" is a valid statement.
Of course they're just as often recognized for using shitty protections and some other stupid stuff.

Well i dont really care. As most of the new games just have a DVD-Case with the game in it and maybe an instruction inlet of some pages.
But the way Ubishit is saying that, just makes me hate them more. As if they would care of the environment.

this sucks. i love manuals for games, just like i loved game boxes. i miss those, and ill miss these if 'real' companies start doing it too Sad

and yes, ill miss dvds and eventually blu-rays for games, when shit finally becomes completely digital....

theres just something about having something tangible... i just love it, especially when it comes to games... no one NEEDS to read game manuals... seriously; but if theres a nicely printed and designed one in the box, then ill WANT to... if theres a digital one on the disc, who gives a fuck, ill never bother with it. but a printed glossy manual....fuck yeah.

Manuals printed in full color are beyond awesome.

Ah, the good 'ol days of gaming where manuals were thick and game boxes good-looking.

One of the things I like the most when it comes to retail games is the manual. I enjoy reading it and it's just great to have it in your game box. So fuck you UbiShitSoft, first you introduce that shit DRM and now this you low life pieces of shit. Fuck you. /rage over

Im all for manual less games. I do like maunals though and like all the extras you get in the box when you buy from the shop, but if it helps save the planet in the process then it's no biggie... (even if that is clearly NOT ubisofts main motivation..)

This is a bad move by Ubisoft, they could have charged at least an extra 5 pound for the boxed 'with paper manual' version

reminds me of when i was a kid and my parents would buy that one game i was excited about and as soon as we left the store i would tear open the case and read the manual on the car ride home.. as an adult game manuals were apart of my "just got a new game" tradition, id buy a game , go home and sit on the crapper and read the manual.. no more i guess if this becomes standard industry wide. id be a little sad..

"we want everything on the PC to be digital!" "lets tell them we are trying to be eco friendly!"

'in other news, UBI CEO Yves Guillemot is in stable condition after being hospitalized for trying to use an xbox 360 as a fleshlight.'
