I usually play my dos games under dosbox in Linux, but recently I've had to spend a lot of time with Windows 7 at home, and I realised how crappy the midi patches were there. I looked into the possibility of changing them.
But apparently Microsoft, in their wisdom, removed this functionality from Vista and upwards, restricting custom soundfonts to users of specific Creative software what a load of shit!
So here I bring you the software synth used in Linux, but compiled for windows, with the Real 3R patch, which is argueably the best sounding patch there is.
1. Run the Setup_Eng.exe file and install to C:\timidity this is an easy way to get the device driver.
2. Extract the archive to C:\ overwriting the previously installed files.
3. Go to C:\timidity
4. Execute twsyng.exe
5. Right click the little speaker icon with the red keyboard and click "start synthesizer"
6. Doubleclick "PLWMidiMap.cpl" and select Timidity++ Driver as default device, press ok.
7. Play your favorite Dos games through your favorite frontend with far better sound - Enemy Unknown et al greatly benefits here, just listen to the main theme to notice the difference.
I tried this. In my opinion The Yamaha SY-50XG is vastly superior to this and any other of the multitude of soundfonts I've sampled. Much more balanced, true-to-life. More dynamic with stronger, fuller drums. The con is it's notoriously difficult to get working on a modern Win7 PC as it was last developed when XP was a fairly new Windows.
No shit Sherlock! - Obviously a hardware solution is better than a software solution when we talk sound!.
I'm just offering a cheap software solution here, that works on all newer Windows versions and is better than what is included in Windows.
If you use it or not is up to you, but don't start comparing it to hardware solution that you have to pay money for.
Hold on, a software solution is what I'm suggesting here.
The SY-50XG is a software synthesizer from Yamaha, which has the exact same soundfont as the DB-50XG daughterboard on those videos. IE they sound identical.
If the SY-XG50 is *anything* like the Yamaha XG synthesiser that came with the PC versions of Final Fantasy VII and VIII .. then you couldn't PAY me to put that shit back on my PC. Had some of the absolute worst MIDI quality I'd ever been unfortunate enough to endure.
The SY-XG50 is exactly what came with FF7. The FF8 soft synth is another thing altogether.
You really thought it's bad? I think it sounds gosh-darned nice. You sure you didn't do something wrong in it's configuration or the FF7 config applet?
Here's a couple more samples I've uploaded myself from System Shock.
No, I like fluidsynth more, the yamaha has sort of a plastic sound to it.
But if you like that simply set the Default Midi Type in the timidity++ gui to XG instead of GS.

That's not the same thing.
I find Fluid very inconsistent. Many tunes have instruments that play far too loud or quiet, some don't fit in the tune at all. There's hardly any "space" or "air" around the instruments making them sound less real and more synthetic. It sounds harsh rather than smooth. The individual samples themselves are of high quality, but the way they work together is another thing.
Try playing the System Shock Medical level song if you have it and compare it to the Yamaha on the link I posted. You'll likely notice how the square wave plays abnormally loud, which was not a problem with FM, Awe32/64 or Yamaha.
Not only is it just a Windows XP thing, it's also got this weird Y2K problem of it's own where it crashes when trying to play anything if the system date isn't set before 2004 IIRC.
There's a VST version of the synth out there, too. That's what I'm using to record the samples. It works fine for playing midi files but you can't obviously use it in games.
I included a program that allows you to change default midi device in windows to timidity, thus making the configuration of any third party program unneeded, it will 'just' work.
Meaning you have a lot less work with my method than with the one you linked.
So get your facts right or shut up.

its not nice to slunder people if they are right... you still need Midi Yoke to hook up a custom Midi Synthesizer to your drivers that will enable you Tymidi general synch in Win7/vista/xp/DosBOx... and the only thing you added was Putzlowitschs Vista-MIDIMapper thats a crappy Midi changer that doesn't even post output ID when "Vista and Weven MIDI out Setter" is the way to go
Get link
Ps. the only "Thanks" you get for the Sound fonts that you added in the Musix folder from FluidR3 GM
but you can download them from http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/file-detail/fluidr3-gm-sf2-1401.html and ever better ones if your a audioholick like me
Why is it so fucking complicated to just change the fucking midi sounds....
Long time ago I had the same files installed that epsilon posted in his first post (with timidity) and while it sounded nice, the sound lag was MASSIVE...

blame MS for not including a Midi synch changer and some crappy Roland sound fonts

Timidi works fine when you set it correctly [resample cache set to 2097152 and access priority on Low (one core Cpu)/Normal (dual core cpu) with 497 max compute time]with Midi Yoke
its like this Timidi uses sound Fonts {for better fonts use http://www.sf2midi.com/soundfonts/ },
Midi Yoke creates custom hook up drivers that will enable easy Midi device change enabling you usage of the Timidi sound fonts in Dos/dosbox or other Midi programs
and "Vista and Weven MIDI out Setter" will Change/Exchange the default General Synth on Windows OS to a more permanent drivers the Yoke custom [aka Timidi sound fonts]
