OK so my wireless G just shit all over streaming 720p mkvs (not to mention that the one broken antenna ain't helping reception even ~20 feet away) :/

My laptop supports wireless N, but routers come in 2 flavours, 150 mbps and 300 mbps.

guy at the store said 300 for sure, but I guess I wanted to check here first Razz

oh, 150 is $45 and 300 is $60 (d-link).

You have problems streaming 720p content over G? Confused

Wanna run some tests before buying N? Because I know that sometimes other WiFi networks interfere with yours and speed suffers - but that is what the channels are for. Try changing the broadcasting channel and see what speeds you get. I get ~3MB/s and that is more than enough to stream 720p content. Smile

I wonder if the problem then is more related to the fact that I'm getting a shit signal in my bedroom (router is out in the living room on the opposite side of the apt). I get only 1 bar, and that's even close to the door, and I snapped off 1 of the 2 antennas a while back (even 3 ft away from the router I don't even get full bars of reception).

oh, and my laptop picks up about 20-30 other networks, most better than the one in my apartment.

edit: I should say copying speed is important as well as likely I'll be filling 320gb HD and deleting over and over again over wireless Smile

so if I'm buying a new router anyways, is 300 mbps worth it over 150 mbps for $15 more?

Go into the router configuration and look for something like this:

Then try to change the channels to see which one will give you the best results.

As for N, if you get interference with your G network, you will get a similar interference with the N network. I'd find the problem first. Smile

I guess the best test is to just copy a file from wired computer to laptop and look at the speed?

Yeah, I do that. There probably are some more professional tools, but this is the most basic and most effective tool. Take a look at the copy speed at each channel, and pick the fastest one. Also, remember to let it run for a minutre or so, not for 2-3 seconds and then cancel.

even I'm surprised :/

I live in a building with ~400 apartments, with likely another 1000 units within 500 meters ... anyways I'm probably exaggerating .. more like 15 or so, just the list on my wireless connection manager seems massive Razz

ok, well I got sick of the damn thing dropping the wireless signal when I carried the laptop into my bedroom so new router is now bought.

good news is I get full 5 bars of reception now.

bad news is that those 39 networks are obviously fucking me over...

here is what the network status says when playing an mkv over the network...
