On XP most of the time when OS freeze while writing data to HDDs after restart there were disk recovery operation.
On Vista I never noticed such behavior and wondered why but today I discovered that on Vista "Enable write caching on the disk" option is disabled by default even on internal hard drives and there is even an additional option "Enable advanced performance" which is disabled too and can't be enabled without enabling the write caching.
I googled a little bit on whatever it's worth to enable such options or not and what are performance gains could be. Results almost split 50 / 50 for the "Enable write caching on the disk" and "Enable advanced performance" should only be enabled if computer is attached to UPS but it's still better to not enable it as it's a left over option from Windows 2003 Server. Also for RAID both options should be disabled, and write caching should be enabled in RAID control application.
So, fellow humpers what's your opinion on this, what options do you enable and are you using UPS's or not ?
