I was surprised not to see a page dedicated to this masterpiece of gaming, so here it is:
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
by Bethesda Softworks
1996
First Person RPG
My most favorite game *ever*, the only one I still play regularly even after more than 14 years from the first time I tried it.
At the time, I was totally amazed by the size of the world (I believe still today it's one of the biggest gameworlds ever made) and by the fact that everything looked so alive - from the rumors regarding rulers that got replaced (though nowadays I know it's just random fluff) to those rumors regarding the quests you had/hadn't completed which actually led you to believe that your actions had an effect on the gameworld - though it wasn't really true.
It's also got one of the best atmospheres I've ever seen in a videogame, especially in dungeons which were amazingly scary for the time. If (and this is a pretty big if) Bethesda was able to accomplish everything that had been planned for this game it'd have been even greater - to get it out in time they had to cut tons of stuff:
- a true reactive political system (with states changing their alliances, declaring wars - there were even plans to show actual battles taking place when a player arrived at a city which was under siege
- additional guilds, including The Order of the Lamp, the Necromancers were supposed to be joinable, the player should have been able to prostitute himself for money and being able to offer bard services in taverns
- there were plans regarding parties of adventures that actively opposed the player during the mainquest (something like what was done in Wizardry VII, where NPCs acted independently from the actions of the player)
- a much more fleshed out choices/consequences system - quests were supposed to have long term consequences (the son of someone who had been hurt by the player taking his revenge)
- houses owned by the player could be burglared, clothing had to have an actual effect on gameplay (both on NPCs reactions and regarding climatical changes), there are in-game carpentry stores which are however not fully implemented (meaning the player could have been able to furnish his own house)
- every item was planned to have particular physical properties and an individual representation in the gameworld (and not just a generic loot-like sprite)
and a whole lot more I can't remember at the moment. As you can see, however, the game was VERY ambitious, much more so than Morrowind and Oblivion put together.

Agreed, it was amazing how real the world looked back then. I remember back then I thought that if we've reached this level of interaction in a game, then how far will we have come in 10 years? future back then looked very interesting, and not as bleak as reality proved it to be.
Since 1996 we've only been going downhill except in graphics.
The good old times, back when consoles were something you played mario or sonic on and had no influence on rpg's.

Heck, that's exactly what I was thinking back then as well. Another game I was very excited about at around the same time (I believe it was 1995) was Ultima VIII, thinking what it could have become if only Origin had followed Ultima VII's steps, instead of making a completely different game, still amazes me today.

I think the problem for Bethesda was they fired Julian Lefay and had Todd Howard fill his position.
Julian was the designer and programmer on Arena and Daggerfall. And commonly known as 'The father of The Elderscrolls'.

Everybody who was on the forum in 2010, but didn't post in this thread when it was originally made in 2010 automatically fails the crpg fan check.

Don't think I nicknamed it anything, I was the only one in my circle of friends who enjoyed RPG's.

Ah yes, the good old Daggerfall bugs. I still remember the first time I fell into the void, a quite memorable experience
As a side note, I recently found out about this project, which aims at rebuilding the Daggerfall engine. The guy has made some pretty impressive progress already and while the game isn't exactly playable in the current state, I still can see lots of potential. For instance, if the guy was really able to implement all the missing features I'd be willing to become his sex slave.

The official page for the engine he's using to remake Daggerfall is here. He has expanded the project to cover several other games with it. It's VERY ambitious and I hope he finishes the project.
The blog where his updates on work progress are posted can be found here.

DaggerXL newest update:
Quote: | I’ve been away for a while, I went on a long vacation (first one in years by the way) and have been busy with the holidays. I haven’t forgotten about this project and will give a small update about what’s going on. This is going to be a short post but important.
The wait is not been for nothing though, I plan on releasing the DaggerXL Beta within the first month of the new year and then will proceed to get the DarkXL Beta out soon afterwards. Just to be clear, by Beta I mean the games playable from beginning to end and fully completable. Of course there may still be bugs and they won’t have all the features I want to call them “done” (as close to done as projects like these every get anyway) – thus the Beta – but they should be good enough to replace playing them in DosBox. |
Words cannot even begin to express how much I'm looking forward to this. He plans to implement all the features cut from the original, then there's the modding tools... mind boggles.

No idea how he managed to reverse engineer the code to such an extent, but hats off for the impressive accomplishment.
Looks like there's still quite a lot of work to do, but he's slowly getting there.
