It is the year 2237. After the earth has become uninhabitable due to an ecological collapse, the remaining people live on overcrowded space stations in earth's orbit. The young doctor Laura Portmann is one of them. She hopes for a better future on the distant planet Rhea. But to get there she needs money. She signs up for a job on the derelict cargo ship Kassandra, heading for a 4 year flight to Station 42.
The crew members spend the most time of the fully automated flight in deep sleep while, in 8 months shifts, always one person stays awake to monitor the space ship. Due to the current terrorist threat there is also an additional security person aboard: Samuel Decker. Toward the end of her shift, Laura Portmann hears unusual noises from the cargo bay, and she feels observed. Her colleagues will be awakened, and together, the crew sets out to investigate the cold cargo hold...................

Spoiler:
Those of you worried that Cargo will turn out to be just another Alien clone are going to be happy by the end of this review. Because, despite what the marketing for the film may have us believe, Cargo is not the typical space-station horror you might be expecting. It is a much grander work than that, blending classic scifi ideas about the destiny of humanity with massive visual scope and confident direction from first-time feature directors Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter. In short, Switzerland has not only produced its first large scale science fiction film, but one that showcases enough smarts and skill that it ranks among scifi cinema's best.
In all honestly I was completely taken aback when the first act of Cargo started to play. I knew Engler's budget was a mere fraction of what Neil Blompkamp had for District 9 and even less than Duncan Jones had for Moon, so where were all these massive Blade Runner by way of anime shots coming from? I expected the film to be peppered with the odd establishing shot here and there to give the illusion of scope beyond the frame, but in Cargo epic shots keep coming and coming and coming. And just when you think the film can't get any bigger, Engler and Etter set their entire 15 minute climax in space, outside a HUGE space station. And the VFX shots are truly staggering, competing with anything coming out of Hollywood. You can see the production crew's sleepless nights up on the screen and it is this kind of sheer ambition that makes Cargo such a rewarding viewing experience.
There's a few releases nouseforaname, a bluray too (Cargo.Da.draussen.bist.du.allein.2009.Blu-ray.UNTOUCHED.1080p.German.DL.BD25, only german subs?) - another one with supposedly subs is: sow-cargo.da.draussen.bist.du.allein.x264.720.
I should have mentioned it in the op, but I can't find any English subs for the Blu Ray rip.
From day one I've been watching this film and now the International trailer is out I can only hope a English release is due.
i think its unlikely youll see a fansubbed sub release for the movie... you rarely do, especially for the more obscure ones, and especially for european ones... unless you are VERY lucky.
you will most likely have to make do with an auto-translated broken english sub made from an official german sub set... thats unfortunately usually how it goes
Well I started doing one.. there is not much talk in the movie. But I have to say that I am disappointed.
6.5/10
Surprisingly well for a austrian production but there was so much potential. If you are still interested I might finish this one. Keep in mind that my english sucks
You can't actually really compare them. Don't get yourself mislead by the trailer, it looks like a tense thriller. But it's a drama with some tense moments.
It is more a sunshine like film. Without having it's high production values, good cast and tense moments :/
I've got a little bit work to do, any german talking member willing to go on with the subbing?

I thought this is a Swiss production, no ?
I'm prepared to have a look at your basework if you want
Wow this movie really caught me off guard.
Great stuff.. the special effects and sets are particularly impressive considering the budget and the acting is quite good as well.
Easily keeps up with similar hollywood movies such as pandorum.

File size went from 12 to 18 kb... 50% more but just 10 minutes of talk added
I could take a look at it if you tell me how
never did any subbing before so no idea how much work it is, but if it's not very time consuming I'm sure I could help.

haha, what do you think there's a program that transcribes your thoughts in lighting speed? It is timeconsuming, pretty obvious from this thread
pff I know it's gonna take some time obviously, but I would like to know how much time that might roughly be.
how long does it take to sub an average movie?

No fucking idea, if you have ever transcribed something then its roughly the same. Worst part of completing a college report of 100+ pages having to transcribe 2 hours of interview for an additional 60 pages :E
