DreamWeb

  • Publisher: Empire
  • Developer: Creative Reality
  • Media type and size: CD-ROM, Floppy disk
  • Genre: Adventure
  • Release date: 1992 (CD 1994)
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:
Ryan, a bartender from a dystopian future can't sleep peacefully for months. His nights are sequences of nightmares and strange dreams, days with frequent black-outs with strange visions, until one night a figure in monk attire appears to him, and tells him the story of the seven evil ones, uniting to destroy to Dreamweb, the only barrier between the world and darkness. The monk makes a proposition: Ryan becomes the deliverer: the one who would keep the Dreamweb safe by killing those who try to destroy it.

Descending into paranoia and just wanting dreams to stop, Ryan accepts the mission, then wakes up in a puddle of cold sweat, next to his beloved girlfriend in her house, and late for work. Again.

Dreamweb is a DOS and Amiga parser-free cyberpunk top-down adventure game first released in 1992, then later released on CD in 1994, and developed by Creative Reality and published by Empire Interactive Entertainment.

The game feature mature themes and plot, with violence and a sex scene, rare for an adventure game of that time, which were heavily influenced by the cartoonish style of Lucasarts adventures.

  • Multiplayer: No
  • System requirements:
    Quote:
386 20 MHz CPU, 4MB RAM, 256 colour VGA graphics or Amiga 500/600/1200

  • Videos:

Another one of those games i liked back in the day. The story sucked me into this game, i never got very far into it due to me sucking at it for some reason (haven't revisited it in a long time though).

An adventure game in a cyberpunk setting, a remake of this would be interesting.

Yeah, the atmosphere was truly amazing and the story was great, but gameplay could have been better. I found it far too linear and the fact that you could pick up most of the items you found (even if they had no use) didn't help - good game though.

I believe it the first game that actually depicted a rather explicit sex scene? (Custer's Revenge aside Razz)

It wasn't a true *game*, just a bunch of sex scenes with minimal interaction (and it was pretty ridicolous as well, I mean a guy has a penis bigger than his arm Laughing - low-res gfx didn't help in this regard).

Anyway, if you want to see what I was talking about: from 4:44 onward.

Pretty violent for its time as well (look at that gun which splatters the poor guy all over the place) and definately very, very bleak - and the music certainly helps to set the mood. Also, I loved the ending - totally unexpected.

So yeah, anyone who likes good old adventuring definately has to play this at least once - if only the gameplay was better it could have been a true masterpiece.

HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THIS THREAD!? I demand answers! Mad Easily one of my all time favourite games, I played the shit out of this when it first came out -- and I've done a new playthrough every year since then. The PC-CD version was by far the best, due to the excellent soundtrack and voice acting, but the Amiga version will always hold a place in my heart <3

Oh and even though he can't reply, I'm sure he can still read; sorry CRAIG2 but you're dead wrong. The PC-CD wasn't censored, I know because I have it. I've had it since 1994 Very Happy

First "kill" -- pretty much everything here was how the demo played out and it was what got me hooked on the game. Eleven years old, taking a ten mile (16km) hike to the nearest carboot sale and finding the Amiga version of the game on one of those bootleg stalls ... I only had £2 and the game was on five discs, for 50p a disc, and had to beg the guy to let me have it for £2. Definitely one of my happiest childhood gaming memories <3 Oh and the reason I'm bumping the thread?

IT'S GONE FREE, BABY!

Thanks to the generosity of Creative Reality and Neil Dodwell, the ScummVM team is happy to announce the freeware release of Dreamweb.

This game was originally released in 1994 and is set in a cyberpunk dystopian city where a bartender named Ryan has been having some disturbing dreams...

You can find the freeware release for English, French and Spanish on our downloads page.

The ScummVM team would like to make it clear that this game was given a (15) certification at release as it features a disturbing story and violence, and is thus not suitable for children.

If you happen to own an original version not yet available on our download page, please contact us so we can work on making it free too!

However, certain re-releases of Dreamweb are censored. When it was originally released, it featured a rather notorious scene where Ryan barges in on his first target to find him having sex with a groupie. Both are completely naked, as the girl craws off him and hides under the bed, revealing some male frontal nudity. This scene alone was enough to get the game banned in Australia. The game was censored and approved for release in Australia, but to perhaps numb the controversy, all CD versions worldwide are also censored. This version puts a top on the girl, as well as a pair of brief on the man, but the scene is otherwise the same. There are other minor bits of nudity which were left untouched, like Ryan's girlfriend in a bathtub. But it's still quite odd that this scene alone was called out for controversy, when the rest of the game features a variety of extraordinarily bloody deaths, ranging from shootings to explosions to getting pummeled by trains. As one point you have a conversation with a woman who lower half has been blown across the room. This sort of "violence OK, sex BAD" thing is the same thing that got Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas in trouble with Hot Coffee years later, which shows the slightly backwards nature of certain Western cultures.

Not all CD versions are not censored. I've got the UK retail Empire CD-ROM, released in 1994, and it has the naked sex scene at the start.
